Lake Forest Festival Celebrates Serbian Heritage with Food, Music,โ and Fundraising
LAKE FOREST, IL – A vibrant celebration of Serbian culture unfolded Saturday as Lake Forestโ hosted its annual festival,โ drawing attendees with traditional โcuisine, music, and a commitment to โsupporting โboth local andโ international humanitarian efforts. The event, a โcornerstone of โขthe community, showcased the rich traditions of Serbia and theโฃ broader Balkan region.
The festival servedโ as a fundraiser for the host church’s operations, ministries, and a rangeโ ofโข charitable organizations. Proceeds will โฃbenefit โขgroupsโ including Feed โคMy โฃStarving โChildren,โฃ Orthodox Christian Prison Ministries, International Orthodox Christian Charities, Our Serbs, and Lifeline Humanitarian Association. Attendeesโ enjoyed a menu featuring slowly โroasted organic pork and lamb,โฃ cevapchiche (char-grilled ground beef โคand pork sausages),โ pork shishโฃ kabob skewers, pleskavica (a Serbian-style spicy beef โand pork patty with peppers and onions),โฃ and traditional stuffed cabbage rolls, all prepared โฃby church volunteers like gabeโ Popovic.
“Performing these songs is pureโข joy – it’s music from Serbia and Macedonia and โall across the Balkans, music that wasโ sung in the villages of our ancestors,” said Ordana Trbuhovich, a โmember of the Seoske Dame singing group, who performed at theโ event. The festival’s appeal extended beyond the Serbian community, with โฃattendees like โขDawn โฃBuglio of Libertyville praising the welcoming atmosphere and preservation of cultural heritage.
“These are welcoming people, a gorgeous culture inspired by ancientโ music and dance, and it’s good to see themโ keeping their heritage โฃalive,” Buglio said. The annual festival provides a vital link for the local Serbian community to connect โwithโข its roots and share its traditions with a โwider audience.
