Shane Christie, Former Rugby Star, Remembered as Adventurous Spirit Following Farewell
Nelson, New Zealand – Friends adn family have farewelled former Highlanders flanker and Tasman NPC captain Shane christie, who passed away in 2020. A service held in Nelson celebrated the life of the celebrated rugby player, known for his passion both on and off the field.
Christie’s death has prompted an outpouring of grief and remembrance within the New Zealand rugby community and beyond. He represented the All Blacks Sevens and the Mฤori All Blacks during his career. Beyond rugby, he was described as an avid adventurer, embracing pursuits like building, surfing, golf, skydiving – achieving his skydiving hours in record time – and a yoga retreat in India.
“Shane’s life was one of passion,whatever he turned his hand too,he gave everythingโฆ he travelled the world seeking adventure,” said a friend,as reported by 1News. “As a friend Shaneo was loyal, honest and cared deeply, always genuine and checking in on us and our whฤnau, even through his own battles.”
Christie’s sister, Katrina, acknowledged the immense support received but also addressed misinformation circulating regarding his final days. “I wished I knew when he started rugby what the possible outcome was going to be, and I woudl have said the price tag is not worth the sacrifice, but he loved the game, and it brought him so much joy,” she stated.
She emphasized the joy he brought to his family, describing him as a devoted son, brother, and uncle.”From the laughter that still echoes when we remember your cheeky grinโฆ your legacy lives on in the hearts you touched,” Katrina said. “Though our grief is deep, so too is our gratitude for the time we had with you. Rest easy, little brother, we will carry your love with us always.”
