Kangaroo Chaos at Tour Down Almost Derails Jay Vine GC Victory

Kangaroos Cause Chaos at Santos Tour Down Under – Jay Vine Secures Overall Win Despite Crash

Jay Vine of UAE Team Emirates has won the Santos Tour down Under despite a bizarre and dangerous incident involving kangaroos during the final stage. Two kangaroos ran into the peloton while riders were traveling at approximately 50kph, causing a crash that forced Bjerg to withdraw from the race.

Vine himself collided with a kangaroo, hitting its backside as it thrashed around on the ground, but managed to avoid serious injury. He had to change bikes with Ivo oliveira but was able to finish the stage and secure his overall victory.

“Everyone asks me what is the most dangerous thing in Australia and I always tell them it’s kangaroos because they wait and hide in the bushes until you can’t stop and then they jump out in front of you,” Vine said, highlighting the unpredictable nature of the wildlife hazard. “Point proven today… One of them stopped, went left-right left-right left-right and then I ended up hitting its backside as it was flaying around on the ground. It’s one of those things.”

The team faced a challenging race with multiple riders withdrawing due to crashes and injuries. Vegard Stake Laengen suffered a rib injury and withdrew on Saturday, while Juan Sebastián Molano was a non-finisher on Sunday due to fatigue. This left Adam Yates and Oliveira to support Vine.

Despite the setbacks, Vine persevered, finishing 1:03 ahead of Mauro Schmid (Jayco AlUla) and 1:12 ahead of Harry sweeny (EF Education-EasyPost). He also won stage two to Uraidla.

Vine acknowledged the difficulties faced by the team, stating,“This year we started off really positive and we just had more and more bad luck as the race went on… it’s definitely proven to me it’s never over till it’s over in this race for us.” He expressed concern for his teammates and relief at being able to hold onto the jersey.

Tour Down Under Cancels Willunga Hill Finale Amid Extreme Heat and Fire Danger

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor February 1, 2026
written by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Extreme heat and fire danger force Santos Tour Down Under organizers to remove the iconic summit finale up Old Willunga Hill and reroute Saturday’s “queen stage” at the WorldTour season opener.

Temperatures nearing 110F degrees‌ and fire danger at ⁣red-hot levels ‍prompted race officials to eliminate the‍ famous hilltop finale from the decisive fourth stage,‍ citing an⁢ “extreme” fire‌ risk in the Mount Lofty Range.

“While removing the famous Willunga Hill climb disappoints cycling fans, ⁢rider and spectator safety remains our event’s number one priority,” TDU race director Stuart‌ O’Grady said Friday. “After consulting emergency services authorities, riders, and the UCI, we agreed ⁤to‌ proceed⁣ with‍ a modified program for Saturday’s racing.”

Extreme heat and bushfire conditions previously disrupted the Tour ⁣Down Under, and organizers stressed rider health and public safety as paramount.

officials consulted with the country Fire⁣ service, South Australia Police, riders, and ⁣the UCI before removing the race’s most iconic finish.

The stage begins one hour earlier and finishes on High Street in the Willunga township, just before ⁣the final ramps of the Tour Down Under’s signature climb.

Vine and Narváez Dominate Tour Down Under Stage 2, UAE Emirates‑XRG Lead GC

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor January 31, 2026
written by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

UAE Emirates-XRG just set the tone for 2026 with a devastating 1-2 at the Santos Tour Down Under.

Jay Vine and Jhonatan Narváez moved one minute clear on GC after they rode everybody out of the wheels on the final climb of stage 2 on Thursday.

It was a ruthless show of force that handed the world’s No.1 team its first WorldTour victory of 2026 after Vine won the Aussie national TT last week.

Defending champion Narváez sat up in the final meters of his and Vine’s 14km attack on Thursday afternoon to hand his 30-year-old teammate the win.

“The ochre leader’s jersey has been on my mind since the last time I wore it,” said Vine at the finish, who won the overall in 2023. “I really love this jersey, and it’s really unbelievable to win it on such a hard stage.

“We’ve got such a strong position now with me and Jonny [Narváez] and with Adam [Yates] behind. Being led out by him was great,” Vine said at the finish.

Sam Welsford ruled the
Santos Tour Down Under sprints with an iron fist during the past two seasons, but that reign ended Wednesday after
Tobias Lund Andresen launched a perfectly timed surge to deny the Aussie in a frantic dash into Tanunda.

Welsford, who swept six of seven sprints at the WorldTour season opener across 2024 and 2025, was surging late along the barriers in his Ineos Grenadiers season debut, but Andresen had just enough to hold on for the first WorldTour win of his career.

Rising star
Matthew Brennan (Visma-Lease a Bike) was also coming fast and crossed second on the road after the high-speed finale for the first major bunch kick of 2026 in the men’s WorldTour.

“When I crossed the finish line, I could see wheels coming up on both sides, but with a leadout like this, it really sets you up for a win,” the Dane said. “It feels amazing to win.”

“I honestly can’t remember the last time I felt this way. It’s unbelievable,” Andresen said. “The bike is incredibly fast, and my teammates did an exceptional job today. I truly enjoyed this finish.”

The eye-watering finish provided the first glimpse of the

Sam Watson achieved the first WorldTour win of the season Tuesday in the opening 3.6km prologue of the Santos Tour Down Under.

Two things instantly stood out.

First, Watson did not wear his team’s white shorts. Ineos Grenadiers’ controversial white-grey knicks were absent when the 24-year-old finished in Adelaide at 50kph.

Second, UAE Emirates-XRG and its strong team of time trialists and climbers did not win… yet.

However, both situations may change quickly.

UAE’s pre-race favorite Jay Vine and defending champion Jhonatan Narváez finished less than 10 seconds behind Watson in a 4-minute ride that served as both a ceremonial start and a racing test.

Regarding Watson’s shorts?

the british road race champion wore dark shorts wiht his national jersey and mirrored the look in his team-issue TT suit.

But cycling fans can rest easy.

Watson switched to team-compliant white shorts for the winner’s ceremony. Other ineos racers also chose white-shorted TT skinsuits Tuesday.
