New Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe leader Remco Evenepoel will have his own buildup to the Tour de France, but the Belgian star will echo at least part of Tadej Pogačar’s 2025 preparation this spring.

The 25 year old looks set to ride next month’s UAE Tour, going head to head with Pogačar’s teammate Isaac del Toro in the stage race.

Pogačar took two stages plus the overall classification in 2025 but has opted to sidestep the competition this spring, with Del Toro stepping in as UAE Emirates-XRG team leader in what is the squad’s home event.

Evenepoel’s participation is yet to be made official by Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe but his participation was confirmed this week by HLN.be.

It is the latest in what is a busy buildup to the summer, with Evenepoel set to have a far better preparation for the 2026 Tour than what he experienced last year.

He was doored by a vehicle while training in December 2024 and was forced to take a lot of time off the bike, something which limited his buildup to the Tour. He won the stage 5 time trial in that race but ultimately withdrew on stage 14, his compromised preparation having an effect.

According to HLN.be, Evenepoel is currently in Calpe with his wife, adding more training kilometers in advance of his first race. That is said to be the Trofeo Ses Salines on january 29th,with the Tour of Valentia to follow between Febuary 4 and 8.

The UAE Tour takes place from February 16 to 22.

He last rode the race in 2023, beating Luke Plapp and Adam Yates for the overall win.

Barring any unforeseen issues, Evenepoel’s busy spring should see him in much better shape than prior to last year’s Tour.

He only began racing at the Brabantse Pijl race on April 18th and while he outsprinted Wout van Aert to win that race, he was not at his usual level in the Ardennes Classics.

He should be much stronger this time around, with his UAE Tour participation said to be followed by an altitude training camp in Tenerife and than the Volta a Catalunya between March 23 and 29.

The Amstel Gold Race, Flèche Wallonne and liège-Bastogne-Liège follow. The latter will likely be his first clash of the season with Pogačar.

Providing all goes to plan beforehand, Evenepoel should be much closer to his potential in that race, which he won in 2022 and 2023.
