Jayco-AlUla’s Tactics Fail: Luke Plapp’s Betrayal Lets Patrick Eddy Win Australian Title

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor January 16, 2026

Jayco-AlUla’s Tactical Blunder Gifts Australian Title to Underdog

published January 16, 2026 07:16:09

Perth, Australia – In ⁣a‌ stunning⁤ turn⁤ of events at the Australian Road Race ‌Championships on January 12, 2026, Jayco-AlUla experienced a catastrophic tactical failure, handing the elite men’s ‍national‍ title to Patrick Eddy of Team Brennan, a third-tier Australian ⁤cycling outfit. The race, held on a challenging‍ 13-lap circuit around ‌Perth, culminated in a controversial finish that‌ has sparked widespread debate within ⁣the cycling community.

A Championship Within Reach

Jayco-AlUla,Australia’s sole WorldTour team, entered ‌the ⁤race as the⁣ clear ⁤favorites. their strategy initially appeared flawless, controlling the race and positioning defending champion Luke Durbridge for a solo victory. Durbridge, known as “Turbo Durbo” for his powerful riding style, seemed⁢ poised to retain his title as he opened a gap on the peloton ⁣with three laps remaining. However, ⁤a ‌critical miscalculation ‍by one of their key riders would unravel their ⁤carefully laid plans.

The Fatal Decision:⁤ Plapp’s ‍Bridge

Sensing potential trouble for Durbridge on the final climb, Luke⁤ Plapp, a prominent rider for Jayco-AlUla, made a fateful decision.Instead of conserving energy and protecting his teammate’s lead,Plapp launched a pursuit, bridging across ‍to Durbridge from the chasing group. This ⁢move, a breach ⁢of unwritten team ‍etiquette,‍ not only risked exhausting himself but also inadvertently offered an chance to rivals. The act⁣ of chasing down a ⁣teammate is considered a significant tactical error in professional cycling,as it⁤ expends valuable energy and can disrupt ⁤team‌ cohesion. Cycling⁤ Weekly details ⁢the importance of team⁢ strategy and the risks of individual ambition overriding collective goals.

Eddy Seizes⁢ the Moment

Plapp’s aggressive move had ‌unintended consequences. As he closed the ‍gap ⁢on Durbridge, he ‍inadvertently provided‌ a draft for Patrick Eddy, a former WorldTour‍ professional riding for the relatively ‌unknown Team ‍Brennan. ⁣Eddy, ‍whose ⁤contract with Picnic-PostNL wasn’t renewed at the end⁢ of the ⁣previous ⁢season, capitalized on the situation,‍ latching onto Plapp’s wheel and surging⁣ past a fading Durbridge. The pair then battled for the⁣ finish, with Eddy ultimately proving the stronger sprinter, claiming a⁣ remarkable victory.

“This means everything,” an emotional ⁢Eddy stated after the race. “I have pretty much won nothing since I won junior nationals, and I lost myself as a rider for the last few years. I’ve found myself again.”⁣ Eddy’s win is especially poignant, marking his first significant victory since 2019 and a triumphant return to form.

Fallout and Criticism

The aftermath of the race was marked by disappointment and introspection within the Jayco-AlUla‍ camp. Durbridge ⁤was reportedly unwilling to ⁢speak to ⁣reporters, while ⁣Plapp expressed ⁢regret over‍ his tactical error. “We come⁤ here to win. It’s a race I want⁣ to win every single year,” Plapp admitted. “It’s annoying, and it will hurt.”

Social⁢ media erupted with criticism of Jayco-AlUla’s strategy,‌ with⁣ fans and pundits alike questioning Plapp’s decision-making.‌ Former professional cyclist Caleb Ewan weighed in on Australian television, stating, “They went from being in the ‍best position you⁣ could be in to‍ the worst, very, very quickly. I wouldn’t want to be at that‍ dinner ⁤table tonight.”

The ⁢Broader Implications

This incident highlights the complexities of team ⁣dynamics and⁣ the importance of adhering to established race strategies in professional cycling. While individual ambition‌ is a natural part of the sport,‍ prioritizing team goals is often crucial for success. Jayco-AlUla’s‌ misstep serves as a cautionary tale, demonstrating how a single, ill-considered move can⁣ derail even the most promising campaigns.

2026 WorldTour Jerseys: Fantastic or Fugly?

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor January 10, 2026

The 2026 ⁣Cycling⁣ Kit ⁣Report Card: Hits, ‍misses, and ‌Head-Scratchers

Updated january 9,⁢ 2026 07:13AM

The january fashion parade of fresh team kits⁤ is perhaps the one thing that can raise a cycling fan from their festive stupor of chocolate and cyclocross. Each year, the ‌peloton’s sartorial choices are hotly debated, sparking joy, derision, ⁢and everything⁤ in between. This year is no different.

Who went wild with a⁤ wacky reinvention? Who struck ⁤the ⁣designer’s curse with a‌ kit that ‍makes ⁣eyes‌ bleed? Will ⁤we see the⁣ arrival of a ‍new GOAT to challenge the likes of la ⁢Vie Claire, Brooklyn, and Vêtements⁢ Z?

Well, sadly, no‌ team tailored something⁣ for 2026 that’s worthy of a ⁤plinth⁢ in cycling’s pantheon of apparel.‌ But there are certainly some … memorable … items in cycling’s new wardrobe. Here’s a breakdown of the most striking – for better or worse – kits in the ⁣2026 men’s peloton.

dig it: Red ⁤Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe, Decathlon CMA CGM, Movistar

Good kit, but it’s going ⁤to take some getting used to seeing Remco⁤ wearing it. (Photo: Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe)

If⁣ launching a plane with pedal power this winter ‌didn’t garner Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe enough attention, its‍ eye-catching chevrons ⁤and color-block ⁣kit should do the job when racing begins. The bold design and bright colors are sure to stand out in the ⁤peloton. It’s a refreshing change of ⁣pace, and a⁣ kit that‌ genuinely ‌excites.

Movistar 2026‍ team kit.
enhorabuena, Movistar. This is classy. ⁢(Photo: Team Movistar)

Movistar’s clean and classy white ‌kit might be⁢ the‌ best thing ‌the Spanish squad does all ⁢year. It stands out while remaining⁣ subtle, dripping with understated cool. Enhorabuena! The⁤ simplicity of the design allows the riders to take center stage, and the white provides⁢ a crisp, modern aesthetic.

decathlon CMA CGM 2026
no brown ⁤shorts for Decathlon CMA CGM, but the flouro sleeve makes this a good replacement. (Photo: Decathlon CMA CGM)

Decathlon CMA CGM’s lopsided sleeve and random red sash make no‌ sense, but ⁤somehow, it works. It’s a bold ⁣choice that defies⁣ conventional cycling kit design. And while the loss of the iconic brown shorts⁤ of the Ag2r-La Mondiale ⁤era is still⁢ mourned by many, this 2026 design offers a welcome change.

Undecided:‍ NSN

NSN‌ Cycling Team 2026 kit
This pseudo-Mondrian look is either genius or gross. Still not decided which. (Photo: NSN Cycling Team)

Team NSN’s “magic‌ eye” of a design is a polarizing one. The geometric patterns are ⁢intriguing, but⁣ the pastel ⁤colorway is…‍ questionable. It’s a risk, and whether it pays off⁤ remains to be seen. ⁤Though, the launch blurb is a masterpiece of marketing speak: “It is indeed inspired by the Mediterranean city ⁢from ⁣which the team’s new⁢ identity has been forged… a city that never stands still, where tradition meets modernity…” A‍ truly‍ aspiring statement.

Ugly: ‍Soudal Quick-step, UAE Emirates-XRG

Soudal Quick-Step 2026
I have an irrational dislike of those green bits. ‍(photo: Soudal Quick-Step)

Quick-Step’s addition‌ of green accents in 2026, while intended to improve⁤ visibility, is a ⁢misstep. The ‍“visibility green” lines ‌simply ‍look… wrong.bring back⁢ the T-Rex logo from⁢ 2024,⁤ please!

UAE Emirates XRG 2026
Tadej ‍must be happy he’s got a rainbow jersey, coz those new ⁢black-and-red bits are pretty fugly. (Photo: UAE‍ Emirates XRG)

Even a team‍ as successful as UAE Emirates-XRG can’t salvage this‍ kit. With a⁤ $60 million budget, one woudl expect a more refined design. Tadej Pogačar is fortunate to have a rainbow jersey to distract from this monstrosity.

Courting controversy: Ineos Grenadiers,Modern Adventure

Ineos⁢ Grenadiers⁤ 2026 kits
Well, ⁣it’s ⁤different⁤ and will⁢ stand out,‌ if nothing else. But maybe they should be called ‘traffic Cone-os’? (Photo: Ineos Grenadiers)

Ineos Grenadiers certainly poked‌ the bear with their 2026 kit. The decision to go with white shorts ⁣was already controversial, but pairing them with an intensely orange top is a ⁢bold ⁣move.Escape Collective has aptly rebranded them as “Traffic Cone-os” – a fitting description.

There ‌are no close-up shots yet, but you get the idea⁣ – ‍maroon ⁣shorts for Modern Adventure. (Photo: Modern Adventure Pro Cycling)

While not ⁢a WorldTour team,Modern Adventure deserves a mention for their maroon ⁣shorts. The “lipstick” look ⁢is… a choice. Thankfully, there’s no sign of a logo for Lance Armstrong’s podcast.

Disappointing: EF Education-EasyPost, Jayco-AlUla

EF Education-EasyPost 2026 kit
the new‍ Assos ⁢kits for EF ⁤Education EasyPost are OK, but ‍the promo photos are better. (Photo: EF Education-EasyPost)

The hype surrounding EF Education-EasyPost’s kit reveals has ⁣diminished as their partnership with Rapha, which‍ consistently delivered innovative and stylish designs. Assos’s first offering for the team is… underwhelming. It’s not bad, but it’s simply… pink. However, the promo photos do feature a nod to the legendary “Assos ⁣Guy,” which is a nice touch.

Jayco‌ AlUla and MAAP⁤ 2026 team jersey
MAAP rolled out the best⁣ kit in the peloton ⁢in 2025, so it’s fair enough that ⁣it stuck with what worked.(Photo: Jayco-AlUla)

MAAP⁣ set a high bar with their 2025 kit for ‌Jayco-AlUla. This year’s offering is largely the same, with a‌ subtle flame motif added. ‍Sadly, the striking ‍silver-gray shorts have⁤ been replaced with black. ⁣A missed opportunity for a truly standout design.

Ultimately, the 2026 kit season is a mixed⁢ bag.‌ While no team ⁢has produced a truly iconic ⁤design, there are still plenty of fascinating –‌ and occasionally questionable – choices to discuss. ⁤As the season unfolds, it will be fascinating ⁢to⁢ see which kits⁤ become synonymous with memorable performances⁤ and which fade ⁢into obscurity.
