Former Tabasco Security Secretary Arrested, Linked to Criminal Group โข”La Barredora“
Hernรกn Bermรบdez Requena, formerly the Secretaryโ of Securityโ for the state of tabasco, has been arrested in โParaguay. Bermรบdez is accused of leading “la Barredora,” a criminalโค association involvedโ in โdrug trafficking, extortion, and fuel theft (huachicol). The arrest was announced Fridayโข night by MexicoS Ministryโค of Citizen Security โคand Protection.
Bermรบdez had been a fugitive since February. He โขrose to prominence withinโ the Tabasco security apparatus during the governorship of Adam Augusto Lรณpez,now a Senator and coordinator for the Morena party. Despite intelligence reports compiled throughout the decade suggesting criminal activity, no action was taken against Bermรบdez – โreferred to as โ”Commander H” โin reports -โ until now.
The arrest โขwas the result of a joint operation involving the โฃMinistry of โNational Defense,โค Secretary of โthe Navy, โProsecutor General of the Republic, National Guard, and โthe ministry of Security and Citizen Protection, supported byโฃ financial and intelligence contributions fromโฃ the national Intelligence Center. The operation leveraged intelligence sharing facilitated by the new Law โof the National Research and Intelligenceโฃ system,โข according toโฃ the Ministry.
Authorities released aโ photograph of Bermรบdez depicting him with long gray hair, a beigeโ sweatshirt, and a beard. Details regarding the specifics of his journey to Paraguay have not been disclosed.
Local authorities in Tabasco โhad been seeking Bermรบdez since February for crimes including criminal association,extortion,andโค express kidnapping. Military officials reported in the summer that he had escaped to Central America thatโ same โmonth.
The arrest places pressure on Adam โAugusto Lรณpez, who โคserved as governor when Bermรบdez held the position of Security Secretary. โOpposition groups have questioned โคhow Lรณpez couldโข have been unaware of his subordinate’s alleged criminal activities, โฃnotably given Lรณpez’s subsequentโ role as Secretary of the Interior in 2021. Lรณpez initially remained silent on โคthe matter, but later gave an interview to Radio Formula, stating, “I have politicalโฃ adversaries from inside, outside and now those in front. As they say in the town, so great is the toad, that is how big it is โthe pedrada.”
President โฃClaudia Sheinbaum addressed the situation duringโค a press conference, stating her government would not protect anyone involved, nonetheless of political affiliation. โฃ”If the Prosecutor’s Office has anyโ evidenceโ against someone who is a brunette militant or not, go ahead, to โcontinue the โคinquiry,” she said.
