U of T โAlum Leads Canadian Cricket Team โคto World Cup Upset
TORONTO, ON โค- U of T alumnus Nitish Kumar captained โฃthe โCanadian national cricket team to a stunning victoryโค overโฃ Ireland at the recent Cricket World Cup, marking a high point for the โsport in Canada. Kumar’s journey from playing “tape ball” cricket on the streets of Pakistan toโ leading his country โฃon the world stage beganโ withโ amateur leagues while studying at UTSC.
Kumarโข explained the origins of his cricket passion, noting that as a child in โขPakistan, players used tennisโค balls wrapped in electrical tape โคtoโ avoid damaging property.โ Upon โarriving in canada, he found competitive leaguesโค but โฃlimited financial opportunities. He balanced corporateโ jobs with pursuing cricket tours, transitioning to a full-timeโ cricketโ careerโค onlyโฃ in 2018 when professionalโ leagues โandโข the national team beganโค offering sufficient financial support.
During his time at U ofโ T, Kumar participated in amateur leagues, an indoorโฃ tennis โball league in โthe oldโ gym, intramurals,โ and played on a select U of T team competing in university tournaments, maintaining โคconnections with teammates toโ this day.
“It was a tremendous honor-playing in a โคWorld Cup was โขa dream come true, and captaining Canada made it even more special,” Kumar said of his World Cup experience. He โขdescribed the win against โคIreland as “a major upset and a proud moment for the wholeโ Canadian cricket fraternity.”
Kumar emphasized โthe mental and physical demands of the sport, stating, “Cricket demands athleticismโ and technical skill, but the hardest parts are consistencyโฃ and mentalโ toughnessโฆbeing able to โคbounce back after a poor performance isโข the real test.”
Looking ahead, Kumarโ believes that โฃincreasedโ investment in infrastructure, including more international-standard cricket grounds โขand stadiums – citing Brampton’s โฃyear-round facility asโ a positiveโ step – along โwith improved coachingโ and mentorship, are โคcrucial for growing โthe sport in Canada.
Kumar cites Wasim Akram as his cricket hero โand is known by teammates as “Mr. Dependable.” Outside of cricket, heโ enjoys playing badminton.
