E-Cigarette Use Linked toโข Increased Sleep problems,Major โคReview Finds
New research reveals a important connection between โvaping and disrupted sleep, including shorter sleep duration and increased risk of insomnia, particularly among young people. A comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis, published today, adds to โgrowing concerns about the broader health impacts of electronic cigarettes beyond respiratoryโ effects. The findings suggest that individuals who use e-cigarettes are nearly 40% more likely to experienceโค shortened sleep compared to non-users.
While frequently enoughโฃ marketed โขas a safer alternative to traditional โคcigarettes and a potential aid for smoking cessation, thisโข study underscores a previously underappreciated consequence ofโข e-cigarette use. The rising popularity of โคvaping, especially among adolescents, makes these sleep disturbances a critical public health issue, possibly impacting academic performance, mental health, andโค overall well-being. Researchers emphasize the need for further inquiry into the long-term effects and underlying mechanisms โขdriving this association.
The analysis, conductedโ by researchers, involved a review of 554 unique โrecords, ultimately incorporating data from 14 โcross-sectional โขstudies identified through searches of EMBASE,Web of Science, and PubMed databasesโค up to September 18,2024. Using โฃR software (Version 4.3) for meta-analysis, the team calculated pooled odds ratios to assess the relationship between e-cigarette use and sleep outcomes. study quality was evaluated using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale.
Results indicated a pooled odds ratio of 1.38 (95% โขCI: โ1.24-1.55) demonstratingโ a significantly elevated risk of shorter โขsleep duration among e-cigarette users compared to those who do not vape. Multiple studies also reported a higher prevalence of sleep disturbances, includingโ insomnia and โฃreliance on โคsleep aids, within the vaping population. โคNotably, adolescents using e-cigarettes faced a 33 toโข 61% increased โฃrisk of inadequate sleep.
The study concludes that e-cigarette useโ is associated with a range of sleep โฃproblems, warranting further โฃlongitudinal research to establish causality and fully understand the long-term implications. This โฃresearch highlights the โimportance of considering sleep health as a โคkey componentโค of the overall health riskโ assessment relatedโค to e-cigarette use.
