Flu Outbreak at Care Home in Vorpommern-Greifswald: Residents & Visitors Urged to Take Precautions

Influenza A has been detected at the Haus der Zufriedenheit, a care facility in Ferdinandshof, prompting the Volkssolidarität, the facility’s operator, to encourage visitors to wear masks and gloves. A sign posted at the entrance of the home urges guests to utilize the provided protective equipment to avoid infection and prevent further transmission.

“We have only had one case so far,” said Ute Erpinder, a staff member at Haus der Zufriedenheit, on Wednesday. The individual is experiencing flu symptoms but has not required hospitalization. “We’ve gotten off relatively lightly so far,” Erpinder added. Despite the limited number of cases, the facility opted for transparency, openly communicating the potential risk, particularly to protect its vulnerable residents. “These are all elderly people, many with pre-existing conditions. This allows guests to prepare and take precautions.”

The development comes as influenza activity appears to be waning across Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, according to the state’s Office for Health and Social Affairs (Lagus). The number of acute respiratory illnesses reported during the week of February 9th to 15th decreased compared to the previous week, including cases of Influenza A and B. Although, Lagus notes that the flu and cold season continues, and COVID-19 viruses are still circulating, albeit at lower levels.

The situation in Vorpommern-Greifswald and Rügen has been particularly acute, with clinics in Greifswald and Wolgast reportedly nearing capacity. The region has also experienced a surge in accidents due to icy conditions. In Stralsund, children have been disproportionately affected by the current wave of influenza, according to reports.

The Asklepios-Klinik in Pasewalk, along with Ameos facilities in Anklam and Ueckermünde, have all reported an increased number of influenza patients compared to last winter, according to a statement from Ameos spokesperson Felix Naundorf. Dirk Werner, Chief Physician of Internal Medicine at the Anklam clinic, stated that the current situation represents a seasonally expected, but overall high, level of infection. He noted that the cases observed are primarily Influenza Type A, presenting with respiratory distress, fever, fatigue, and cough, with severe cases typically occurring in patients with underlying health conditions.

The Volkssolidarität NORDOST e.V., which operates the Haus der Zufriedenheit, offers a range of services including healthcare, housing, childcare, and counseling. Its “Boddenhus” facility in Greifswald serves as a community hub for health, culture, and recreation.
