New Trains and โFacts Overhaul โAim to Restore Confidence in Sydney Rail Network
Sydney, NSW – A half-a-billion-dollar investment in a new train fleetโค and a commitment to improved passenger information are the โฃkeyโ takeaways from Sydney Trains’ response to a โrecent scathing review of its operations. The overhaul aims to address systemicโฃ issues that โcontributed to major disruptionsโค and a lack of reliable information for commuters.
The โpush for change comes after notable incidents, including overhead wiresโข falling on a โฃtrain at โฃParramatta station in May, which left passengers stranded and highlighted deficiencies โขin the network’s communicationโ systems. Transport for NSW Secretary Howard Graham acknowledged theโ need for improvement, stating, “oneโค of theโฃ things we need to โdo is that to โmake sure the information isn’t makingโ it worse forโค passengers.”โข He added that โinaccurate information distributed during disruptions had, actually, exacerbatedโค the situation, โขand pledged, “That will change.”
The new fleet, intended to replace an aging system, is slated to begin service in October on the Blue โฃmountains and Newcastle lines. Graham โemphasized theโฃ investment, stating, “We have invested more thanโข half a billion dollarsโข renewing the Tangara fleet,” โand โthat โretiring older trains would โขlead to a “more reliable”โค rail system for passengers.
Beyond โขthe new hardware,aโ core focusโ will โbe on delivering accurate andโฃ timely information to commuters. Graham noted that distributing incorrect information during disruptions had worsened the situation, signaling a commitment to a more effective communicationโฃ strategy.
