Swarthmore Students Participate in “Screw Your Roommate” Social โExperiment
SWARTHMORE, PA – A novel socialโ event dubbed “Screw Your Roommate Edition” swept throughโฃ Swarthmore College’s dining hallโ last week, prompting a mix of amusement, awkwardness, and surprisingly positive connections amongโค students. The โขevent, organized informally by students, involved participants being subtly “set up” with the roommate of โsomeone they were โinitially intended to date, creating โunexpected pairings andโข a lively atmosphere.
The experiment, described by participants as both “weird” and “fun,” quickly became a campus talking point. While the exact origins remain unclear, the premise involved students expressing interest in โฃgetting to โknow someone, with the twist that they wouldโข rather be introduced โto that person’s roommate. โขThe event’s popularity highlights a desire for unique โขsocial โฃinteractions and a willingness to embrace unconventional methods of โmeeting people within the close-knit Swarthmore community. The outcome of “Screw Yourโ Roommate Edition” raises questionsโฃ about โคthe role of serendipity in forming connections and the potential for โขunexpected compatibility.
Several students shared their experiences withโ Theโฃ Phoenix, detailing the event’s โขunfolding. โOne group โinitially planned to target a date at the expense of a friend named Rica, butโ the plan faltered when a participant, Olivia Cloutier ’29, โ”gave โup the game afterโฃ a little bit,”โ stating simply, “I โขcan’tโ keep secrets.”
margaret Sawa ’29, who โparticipated in a “Screw,” described theโค experience as “very โweird” but ultimately positive, statingโ she “would definitely try it again.” Shelby Destin ’29, Angely Kelly maduro ’29, and Tim Nagornyi ’29 observed the event, noting the unique fashion choices and โlively atmosphere. Maduro, a musician, appreciated the โlive music, while Nagornyi enjoyed theโ “ambience” โขand the feeling of โthe dining hallโค being transformed into “an event.”
Assa Zengerleโ ’29 โhad a particularly successful “Screw,” โขfinding common ground with their assigned date and even extending โคthe evening with a gameโ of pool. Zengerle โฃacknowledgedโฃ being photographed by โคCorinne Lafont during the event, but dismissed it as a minor oddity givenโ the crowded dining hall andโ small campus size. “It โฃwas โคa fun time,” Zengerle said. “We had a โlot in common. โฃWeโข talked a โlot.”
The event’s organizers have not announced any plans โforโค a follow-up, leaving students to wonder if “Screw Your Roommate Edition”โฃ will become a recurring Swarthmore tradition.
