A27 Faces Major Closures for Essential Roadwork
Three Weeks of Disruptions Begin for Motorists
Drivers on the A27 should prepare for significant travel disruptions as extensive road maintenance is set to commence this weekend, impacting multiple sections of the busy highway. The work is slated to address persistent congestion issues that have plagued the route.
Extensive Closures Detailed
The comprehensive work will span a total of three weeks. The initial phase begins Friday evening, July 25, and concludes Wednesday morning, August 13. Motorists heading towards Utrecht should anticipate a closure of the A27 between the Gorinchem and Everdingen junctions from 10 p.m. on July 25 until 10 p.m. on August 1.
Subsequently, from Friday, August 1, at 10 p.m. to Monday, August 4, at 5 p.m., both directions of the A27 will be inaccessible between Everdingen and Gorinchem. The final closure affects traffic heading towards Breda. From Monday, August 4, at 5 a.m. until Wednesday, August 13, at 5 a.m., the A27 will be closed between Everdingen and Gorinchem.
Addressing Persistent Bottlenecks
The decision to undertake this extensive maintenance comes after years of the A27, particularly near Meerkerk, topping the ANWB’s list of congested roadways. Rijkswaterstaat has cited these recurring delays as the primary motivation for the necessary closures, which begin with the summer works tonight.
Impact on Commuters
These closures are expected to cause significant diversions and increased travel times for regular commuters and freight transport. According to a 2023 report by the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association, road congestion in the Netherlands cost the economy an estimated โฌ8.7 billion due to lost productivity and increased fuel consumption (ACEA 2023).
