HII Delivers Advanced Submarine โ Massachusetts โฃ to U.S. Navy
Newport News, VAโ – Huntingtonโ Ingalls Industries (HII) announced today the delivery of theโข Virginia-class โfast-attack submarine โ Massachusetts (SSN 798) to the U.S. Navy. The delivery marks a important milestone in the ongoingโ program โคto modernize the โฃNavy’s undersea fleet.
The Massachusetts is the 12thโฃ Virginia-class submarine delivered โฃby โคHII’s โNewport Newsโฃ Shipbuilding โฃ(NNS) division and theโ 25th built in a collaborative effort with General Dynamics Electric Boat. Thisโ delivery also makes it the fifth U.S.Navyโข vessel to bear the name of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Construction of the nuclear-powered Massachusetts involved โa vast network of skilled workers. More than 10,000 shipbuilders from NNS and Electric Boat contributed โคto its creation, supported by thousands of suppliers nationwide – including over โ20 companies located within Massachusetts itself.
The submarine was christened in May 2023 at NNS, withโข Sheryl Sandberg, founder โof Leanโค In and former Chief Operating Officer of Meta (formerly Facebook), serving asโ the ship’sโ sponsor.
Virginia-classโ submarines โขare designedโ for a variety of missions, including anti-submarine warfare, โanti-surface โขwarfare, strike, and special operations. They represent a critical component of the U.S. Navy’s ability to maintain undersea dominance.
