Stolen Car Returned to Gas Station with 1-Year-Old Inside, โFlorida Man Arrested
BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. โค- โฃA man returned a โฃstolen vehicle to a gas stationโข in Brevard County โafter discovering a 1-year-old child โฃwas secured inside, according to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies arrested 33-year-old William Mullis and charged him โwith grand theftโ of a motor vehicleโข and kidnapping confinement under 13.
The incidentโ highlights โthe potential dangers of leaving โyoung children unattended in vehicles, even for brief โperiods, and raises questions aboutโ existing Florida lawโข regarding leavingโค a โchild alone in a car. Mullis was denied bond Wednesday andโ remains in jail as the investigation continues.
Deputies respondedโ to a report of โa stolen vehicle at a gas station on Tuesday. The vehicle’s owner had briefly left โthe car running while going inside theโ store, leaving her 1-year-old child โคin a carโฃ seat. Mullis allegedly drove off in the vehicle, unaware of the โขchild’s presence.
According to an affidavit, Mullis told deputies he would not have taken the vehicle had he known a child was inside.โฃ He returnedโข the car to the same โgas station shortly after realizing โขthe child wasโ a passenger. The child was unharmed and reunited with their mother.
florida lawโข currently allows an adult to leave a โฃchild โunder the age ofโฃ 6 unattended inโข a vehicle for up to 15 minutes. However, some, like โretired Brevard โSheriff’s Officeโ Sergeant Ronnie Crane, believe the law should be โreevaluated.
“This guy could’ve โขkept going with the kid, and we’ve had children, after a guyโ stealsโ a car, the guy’sโ left children sitting alongโ the side of the roads before,” Crane said.โฃ “That could have very well happened in thisโค case.”
Crane, a โฃneighbor โคof โthe child’s mother, expressed hope that the incident serves as a lesson. He described the motherโค as a “good people” who โ”just made aโข bad choice.”
