Allegheny County Healthโ department Confirms First Human โขCase ofโฃ west Nile Virus in 2025
PLUM BOROUGH, Pa. – The Allegheny Countyโ Health Department hasโ identifiedโข the first โhuman case โof West Nile virusโ in 2025. The individual,a Plum Borough resident,beganโ experiencing symptoms in mid-July,including fever,malaise,diarrhea,and anorexia,andโ is currently recovering at home [[1]].
The ACHD has โinitiated additional surveillanceโฃ and โinquiry in โคthe area starting Thursday [[2]]. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 70% toโฃ 80% โof people infected withโ West Nile virus do not develop symptoms [[3]]. Approximately 20% of those infected willโข develop โขa fever and other symptoms suchโ as headache,โค body aches,โ joint โฃpains, vomiting, diarrhea, or โrash. Most people โwith symptoms can recover on their own,โ butโข less than โขone percent willโ develop severe โsymptoms of neurologic illness โขcaused by inflammation of the brain or spinal cord.
The ACHD advisesโค residents to protectโค themselves โฃfrom mosquitoes byโค removing standing water around their property, โensuring windows and doors have screens, and using insectโฃ repellent on exposed skin. Insect โคrepellent is especially recommended atโข dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active. Mosquitoesโ collected by the ACHD’s โVector Control program on July 8, 2025, in โWilkinsburg, Schenley Park,โ Mt. washington,Beltzhoover,mt. Oliver, andโ Hazelwood testedโ positiveโฃ forโฃ West Nile Virus [[1]].
