Casper Ruud eliminates Novak Djokovic from the Monte Carlo Masters 1000

Montecarlo. Casper Ruud, runner-up at Roland Garros in 2022 and 2023, won 6-4, 1-6 and 6-4 against world number one Novak Djokovic and qualified this Saturday for the final of the Monte Carlo Masters 1000, where he will face the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas.

“I had to play very well, otherwise, I knew it would be impossible for me to win. I was fortunate to win the first set and I had never managed to win a set until today,” highlighted the 25-year-old Norwegian.

“Thanks to that, even if I lost the second set, I knew I was capable of beating him,” he was proud.

Indeed, in five matches so far between the two, including the final of the last Roland Garros, Djokovic had always beaten Ruud, without giving up a set.

Ruud, who in addition to his two runners-up at Roland Garros was also runner-up at the US Open in 2023, had until now the semi-final he lost in 2021 against Andrey Rublev as his best result on the clay of Monaco. At Masters 1000 it will be the second final for Ruud, after the one he lost in Miami in 2022.

Djokovic struggled in Saturday’s match from the start, conceding a breakwhich allowed his rival to take the initiative.

At the beginning of the second set, Djokovic seemed to show fatigue, with gestures of certain exhaustion and puffing during the change of side of the court, on a hot day in the Principality.

Despite this, Djokovic was able to dominate the second set against a Ruud who seemed to get nervous and committed double faults.

In the decisive set, Ruud started strong, quickly distancing himself with 3-0. Djokovic reacted and balanced 4-4.

Ruud won with his serve to go 5-4 and then, with a break as at the beginning of the match, he left the duel for a decision at 6-4.

“Now I’m going to try to have a good night, to be as well prepared as possible for the final,” promised the Nordic tennis player.

Stefanos Tsitsipas Delivers Hit of the Year at Australian Open – AP Agency

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com January 15, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Even though the calendar year 2024 has only cut off half of January, the respected AP agency is already clear: Stefanos Tsitsipas has delivered the hit of the year. The Greek tennis player impressed with an incredible finish right in the first round of the Australian Open Grand Slam.

After losing the first set, Tsitsipas led 1-0 over Belgian Zizou Bergs in the second set and had a break point.

During a long exchange, Bergs played a volley that landed just behind the net and bounced back into his half of the court thanks to backspin.

However, the Greek tennis player ran down the seemingly lost and unplayable ball and managed to place it out of reach of his opponent, narrowly avoiding an illegal touch of the net with the racket.

He amazed not only the audience, but also Bergs, who covered his mouth with his hand in astonishment.

“It was an extraordinary blow, I don’t even know how I managed it,” the hero of the moment shook his head.

“When he hit that volley, it flashed in my head: That’s it, I have to prepare for the next exchange,” revealed Tsitsipas.

Nevertheless, he went after the ball. “I didn’t want to give up, and because I tried, I won the point that turned the whole match,” said the Greek tennis player after converting a break to make it 2-0.

The seventh-seeded favorite finally won 5:7, 6:1, 6:1, 6:3 over the 129th ranked player thanks to a saved almost lost exchange.

Last year’s defeated finalist was originally supposed to face Matteo Berrettini in the first round, but the Italian withdrew due to a leg injury on Sunday, and the “lucky loser” from the Bergs qualification got into the main event instead.

“This is always dangerous when you are preparing for a specific opponent for several days in a row,” Tsitsipas pointed out.

“Zizou did a great job today and made it very difficult for me. I didn’t have an easy time,” added the Greek, whose home team Jordan Thompson awaits in the 2nd round.

Dominic Thiem’s Performance Impresses Tsitsipas and Promises Success

Dominic Thiem’s Performance Impresses Tsitsipas and Promises Success

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com October 25, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Although it wasn’t enough to achieve the victory he had hoped for, Dominic Thiem was certainly not dissatisfied with his performance after his first-round defeat at the Erste Bank Open against Stefanos Tsitsipas.

If the former world number three and 2020 US Open winner had played like this more often in the past season, in his opinion he would not only be in a place around 100 (currently 99) in the ATP ranking.

At least the direct competition agrees with Thiem in this regard: “To be honest: Dominic is now playing at a very good and solid level again,” said Tsitsipas after his hard-fought 7:6 (5), 6:4 victory over the Lichtenwörth native. It was the Greek’s sixth victory in what is now his eleventh duel against Thiem.

“Dominic has weapons that make him dangerous”

“I’ve played against him many times – on many different surfaces, so I can assess that quite well. He’s still got it. He serves well, hits the balls well and moves well too,” said Tsitsipas, who was with naturally had no joy in the draw.

“Dominic is not a player you can easily get ahead against. He has weapons that make him dangerous.”

In contrast to previous times, “not much has changed when you play against Dominic. He still serves very well. This time too he controlled the balls very well and let me run. I had to work hard for every point. Above all In the first set he maintained full concentration on his serves.”

“He served well and then always followed up aggressively on the following point. There’s not really much you can do if you can’t hit absolutely great returns. But that’s easier said than done,” said Tsitsipas.

Tsitsipas believes Thiem will be more successful in 2024

“But I fought and put him under pressure, he then missed a few forehands and I hit a few returns. That’s how I was able to get the break in the second set. But before that he could have easily caught my serve “It was really very close,” said the Greek, happy to have narrowly prevailed.

Accordingly, he believes Thiem can make a big leap forward next year: “I’ve only followed his season every now and then, but I’m pretty sure that his next season will be significantly better than the last one. He always has it still on it!”

It is completely normal for Tsitsipas to have problems getting back on the ATP tour after such a long injury break. “If you don’t play matches for so long, you just lack that self-confidence and you don’t know how to deal with match situations. That affects the game.”

For the Greek, Thiem is still one of the best players of the last decade. “Dominic achieved incredible things in tennis a few years ago. He is one of the few players who was able to win a Grand Slam tournament with a one-handed backhand. Otherwise there were only Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka. That is anything but easy, because most people simply play a two-handed backhand,” said the Greek, who himself is one of the proponents of a one-handed backhand.

Slovak tennis players won the 1st World Group of the Davis Cup over Greece 3:1. The decisive third point was taken care of by Alex Molčan, who defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas, the fifth player in the world ranking, 7:6, 4:6, 6:3. Slovakia thus advanced to next year’s qualification for the final tournament of the Davis Cup.

Alex Molčan achieved one of the most valuable victories of his career in Greece.

Molčan faced a break point in the third game of the duel with Tsitsipas, but he parried it and in the next few minutes he was an even opponent for the favorite. At 3:3, thanks to quality returns, he broke the Greek’s serve, but Tsitsipas immediately controlled with a rebreak, and the fate of the first set was finally decided by a tiebreak. In it, Tsitsipas led 5:3, but Molčan turned it to 6:5 and converted the second set point in a row at 7:6.

The leader of the Greek team, who had a difficult doubles match, quickly shook himself and immediately took Molčan’s serve in the opening game of the second set. Tsitsipas tried to shorten the exchanges and go to the net more often. However, more and more unforced errors were added to his account.

He won the fourth game despite four double faults, but lost his serve at 3:2 after Molčan’s winning return. The best Slovak singles player made it 4:3 and had a break point in the eighth game. However, Tsitsipas turned him away, broke Molčan in the next game and forced a decisive action. He converted the fifth set point on his own serve.

In the third act, both players won their serve confidently until the score was 4:3. In the eighth game, Molčan had two break points, converted the first one and served to win the match. Thanks to three aces and a winning forehand, he brought the duel to a winning end and won one of the most valuable scalps in his career. He handed Tsitsipas his first ever Davis Cup singles loss.

“I am very happy that we won a difficult match in Greece and I contributed to the triumph with two points. Great praise also goes to Zeli and Luki, who played a great doubles game. I started against Stefanos with maximum concentration. The important thing was that I was mentally strong in the key moments. I am satisfied with the performed performance,” stated Molčan in the first interview directly on the court.

Even before Molčan’s decisive victory, Lukáš Klein and Igor Zelenay were able to win in doubles over the Greek sibling pair Tsitsipas 6:3, 6:7, 6:3.

The beginning of the match was good for the Slovak tandem in doubles, when they broke the serve of Stefanos Tsitsipas in the opening game and turned the advantage of the fast break into a win in the first set.

Both Zelenay and Klein had a high first serve percentage and returned much better. Petros Tsitsipas had a nervous impression on the court, he was struggling with his serve, which the Slovak pair took advantage of and converted the second set point in the ninth game after Zelenaya’s winning backhand.

In the second act, the Greeks changed their position on the return. Stefanos Tsitsipas stood on the forehand side and in the first and third games the home pair worked their way to a break point, but Klein and Zelenay held serve.

The Slovaks also managed a game at 4:4, in which the Greeks equalized from 0:40 to a tie, and the fate of the second set was decided by a tiebreak. In it, Zelenay and Klein led 3:1, but the Greeks turned around the unfavorable development and after a quality return by Petros Tsitsipas converted the first set point at 6:5.

In the decisive act, all actors sovereignly won their serve until the score was 3:3. In Tilden’s game, the Slovaks reached a break point with a serve from Stefanos Tsitsipas, which they converted after Zelenaya’s exclusive lob and brought the match to a successful end. In the ninth game, they used the very first match point.

“We already knew before the match in Greece that the point from the doubles could be crucial in the final calculation. I believe that we will bring it to a successful end and win participation in the qualification for next year’s final tournament,” said Zelenay in the post-match interview.

On Saturday, Klein had to scratch the duel with Stefanos Tsitsipas due to cramps, but he got himself together in the doubles. “The third set was very even for a long time. At 3:3 we managed to break and from that moment our game was again at a high level. We made it to the end in one piece,” praised the younger of the Slovak duo.

Swiss Dominic Stricker Shocks Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas in Thrilling US Open Upset

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com August 30, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

The Greek, seventh player in the world, was beaten in five sets by the Swiss Dominic Stricker, 128th at the ATP.

The Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, seventh player in the world, was beaten on Wednesday by the Swiss Dominic Stricker (N.128) in the second round of the US Open tennis, 7-5, 6-7 (7/5), 6- 7 (7/2), 7-6 (8/6), 6-3.

To sign this feat, the debonair-looking Swiss striker boldly played his luck with flashes, constantly looking for the killer shot, often close to the lines. In total, the former junior world number three, with no real reference on the main circuit, signed no less than 78 winning shots.

Facing him, Tsitsipas was, at times, able to count on his first ball (22 aces), especially during the two consecutive decisive games in the second and third sets.

But he also exposed himself in the second ball to the counterattacks of Stricker, who took the service of Tsitsipas six times. The Swiss also stormed the net, with a nice success (42 points gained uphill).

This is the first benchmark success for Stricker, who recently explained that he had disciplined himself on the diet plan, one of his weak points. In the third round, Stricker will cross paths with the winner of the match between Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi and American Christopher Eubanks.

Technical Incompatibilities Amplify Tsitsipas’ Defeat to Alcaraz at Roland Garros 2023

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com June 6, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

All the technical incompatibilities that emerged in the previous four, all in favor of the Spaniard, emerged, amplified, in the ruinous defeat of Stefanos Tsitsipas, who without having either art or part leaves Philippe Chatrier after a dispute that lasted 2 hours and 15 minutes. Picking up the crumbs, except for an isolated flash of lucidity that leads him to at least play the tiebreak in the third set.

Alcaraz “alla Nadal”, straight into the race to lose his head

There is very little to comment, at times it almost seems like a joke. Too much exuberance of the number one in the world when he has time to hit with the forehand, Tsitsipas had too many difficulties in managing Alcaraz’s sorties from the backhand side. Okay the initial 6-2, even if the eleven consecutive points lost from 3-2 are pretty brutal. Another break to zero to open the second set, another break to zero to close it, that set, 6-1. When this is the script, and it seems to keep repeating itself even in the third setit is also difficult for a top player like Tsitsipas to stay focused and not lose his mind. It’s rather disheartening having to throw your arms in the sky to welcome the roar of the crowd celebrating your game, obtained after a streak of seven consecutive games by your rival, as happened on the 3-1 of the third. Especially if you are the fifth player in the world and you legitimately thought that match, before entering the field, that you could play it on equal footing.

What an effort Stefanos! Tsitsipas rejoices for a normal drop shot

Alcaraz serves with other intensity, the Greek doesn’t have the weapons to worry him or even the talent to do it, apparently. He’s too busy limiting the damage, already quite large, in his shifts. His game leaks from all sides, the only fruitful schemes are a few runs to the net, but otherwise it is Alcaraz’s domain. He tosses him from side to side with his forehand, ridicules him with short balls. Tsitsipas has no alternatives, he has no other options to try and fight him. This masterclass, coupled with the equally stellar performance against Musetti, set further confidence in the Alcaraz tank in view of the big match with Djokovic in the semifinals.
