Former Sleep Clinician Sentenced in Hidden Camera Case
Mineola, โNY โ- Sanjai Syamaprasad, 48, a formerโ clinician at theโ Northwell โขHealth โSleep Disorders Centerโ in Manhasset, was sentenced to six months in theโ Nassau County Correctional Center on thursday after pleadingโ guilty to charges related toโข secretly recording patients.
Syamaprasad admitted to installing hiddenโค cameras inside smokeโ detectors in the bathrooms of the sleep center, capturing patients using the โrestroom between โฃJuly 2023 and โฃApril 2024. Patients wereโข aware they were recorded during sleep studies, butโค signage indicated bathrooms were notโ underโ surveillance. He pleaded guilty in July to five countsโ of unlawful surveillance andโฃ two โฃcounts of tampering with evidence.
The tampering charges stemmed from Syamaprasad’sโ attempts to destroy evidence, including burning memory cards โฃand discarding the โฃmodified smoke detectors, after โa colleague observedโ him watching a patient on the toilet via the โhiddenโ cameraโข on April 24, 2023. This observation promptedโ aโ report to supervisors and ultimately, notification to Nassau โCounty authorities.
While initially indicated to receive โa non-incarceration โsentence in July, Nassau County State Supreme Court Justice Meryl Berkowitz revised her decision.โข Nassau District Attorney โAnne donnelly’s officeโ had recommended a sentence of โค7 to 21 years in state prison, citing the potential for hundreds, possibly thousands, of victims, including at least โone minor.
Investigators โฃrecovered three laptops, a memory card reader, and cellphones from syamaprasad’s Brooklyn โapartment. evidence revealedโ he โhad recordedโ hundreds of hours of video, downloading the โคfootage to hisโข personal computer.Authorities also discovered Syamaprasad โhad โplaced similar hidden cameras in โคthe smoke detectors of the โคSTAR physical rehabilitationโข clinic, located in the same building as the sleep center.
Before โbeing led โaway by court officers, Syamaprasad apologized for his โactionsโ and expressed a desire to โmove forward. He โis โscheduled to return โขto โขcourtโ on December 16th for a hearing to determine his level of sex offender registration.
