Formerโ Ice Hockey Player Wade Macleod Dies at 38 Afterโ Battleโ with Cancer
[City,State] – September 18,2024 – Wade Macleod,a former professional ice hockey player who competed in Germany and โขEurope,has died at the age of 38 following a long battleโฃ with cancer. Theโข news was announced Wednesday by his wife,โ Karly Macleod, on Instagram.
Macleod โขplayed for Starbulls Rosenheimโค and Lรถwen Frankfurtโค in Germany, scoring 25 goals and assisting on 24 others inโค 56 games โduring the 2017-2018 DEL2 season with Frankfurt. He also had a โconnectionโ to the Dresden Eislรถwen, signing โa contract withโ the team in โ2018,โฃ though he never played a game for themโฃ due to a cancer diagnosis.
Macleod’s fightโฃ with the disease began in 2013 with โขan aggressive form of cancer. โคHe facedโ anotherโข brainโ tumor โคdiagnosis in 2016, which was โขinitially persistent to be benign, whileโ preparing to move โfromโข Rosenheimโค to โขFrankfurt.He successfully โreturned to play, joining โฃthe Lรถwen Frankfurt in 2017.
Following a period where the cancer โwas considered defeated โขin 2019, Macleod continued his โคcareer, playing โคfor Manchester Storm in England and later in Norway before retiring in 2022 to spend more โฃtime with his family. โฃ
Tragically, the cancer returned in September 2023, after Macleod suffered a โคstroke during a โขcampingโ trip. Approximately โ60% of โฃthe โtumor tissue was removed during surgery, but theโ prognosis remained โguarded. He underwent a total of six โฃoperations.
Fansโค and teams โขrallied โaround Macleodโฃ during his illness, with fundraisers organized in Frankfurt and Dresden to support his treatment. the Dresden Eislรถwen notably โkept his planned jersey โnumber, 19, available and reserved a place for him on the โขroster for the 2019/2020 season.
Macleodโ is survived โคbyโค his wife,โ Karly, and daughters Ava and โGeorgia. A moment of silence isโฃ planned before Thursday’s DEL game between the Lรถwen Frankfurt and the Dresden Eislรถwen to honor his memory.
