Filming is underway for an adaptation of Annie Ernaux’s 2016 novel, with former “Star Academy” contestant Marguerite Barthélémy cast in a role, France Télévisions and france 2 announced Monday. The project marks a significant step for Barthélémy and a deeply personal one for director judith Godrèche, who has long expressed admiration for Ernaux’s work.
The adaptation centers on Ernaux’s revisiting of a pivotal summer at age 17 in Normandy. Godrèche’s connection to the source material runs deep; she previously revealed that her father instilled in her a love for Ernaux’s writing, citing The Years as a formative text. ”There is, in this book, this question of generations, which is captivating for me,” Godrèche told 20 Minutes.she described a “real click” upon discovering Ernaux’s unflinching portrayal of female experience, adding, “While reading Annie Ernaux, I was confronted with the writing of a woman who talks about subjects that only concern women…and it was an upheaval.”
Barthélémy, alongside Valérie dreville, Ariane Labed, and Anna Mouglalis, will appear in the film, scheduled to wrap production on November 28th in Île-de-France and Normandy. The singer-actress also shared a powerful connection to Ernaux’s work, particularly the Event, calling it a ”powerful gesture” that left a “lasting impression.” ”I was shaking, I had to put the book down sometimes. It was really very strong,” she recounted to 20 Minutes.
