Your Neighborhood & Your Heart: How where โขYou Live Impactsโข Cardiovascular Health
People who live in โareas with limited opportunities for walking or โexercise, andโข a highโค concentration of unhealthy food options, face a โคsubstantially greater risk of cardiovascular disease. A new study by UMC Utrecht and Amsterdam UMC indicatesโ this risk can be nearly 5%โ higher.
Researchers meticulously examined the โฃdensity of fast foodโข restaurants and cafes โwithin neighborhoods. “We also factoredโฃ in the availability of green spaces and theโ number of sports facilities,” explains researcher Paul Meijer โคof โคUMC Utrecht, “asโ these โคelements actively encourage physical activity.”
Neighborhoods wereโ assigned scores based on โthier access to healthy dining choices and exercise opportunities. A higher score correlatedโข with more unhealthy food options and fewer opportunities for walking and cycling.
The โLink to Blood Pressure
By cross-referencing data from the โฃCBS (Statistics Netherlands)โ on โoverโ 4 โmillion adults with neighborhood โคcharacteristics and hospital admission/mortalityโค records, scientists pinpointed areas with elevated cardiovascular disease risk. Neighborhoods with the highest scores exhibited a nearly 5% increase in cardiovascular disease risk compared to those with theโข lowest scores.โฃ According to Meijer, this โขseeminglyโ small difference could translate to thousands of additional cases over a decade.
The UMCs emphasize that โคthese findingsโข align with previous research establishing a connection between living โคhabitat,โ obesity, and high blood pressure.โข Meijerโค states, “We hope that municipalities and regional planners will leverage thisโค dataโ to โขprioritizeโค health considerations in the design and growth of neighborhoods.”
The โstudy’s findings โขhave โbeen publishedโฃ in the peer-reviewed scientific journal,Theโข Lancetโ Regional Health Europe.
Thisโ research really highlightsโค how much our surroundings influence our โhealth. โโฃ It’s a powerfulโ reminder that creatingโ healthier โcommunities is vital for everyone. What do you think?
