Sporting Director Criticizes Benfica’s “Steal” of Indoor Track Championships in 2023

Paulo Reis, the athletics director of Sporting, the club that saw Benfica ‘steal’ the double achieved in 2023, noted that the indoor track championships “are always very balanced”.

“Last year we won by half a point [em masculinos], this year we lost by one point. The team did very well, had an excellent weekend, personal records, we won seven individual races, but then we had two third places in races in which we knew we would have difficulties and we ended up losing by one point”, analyzed the also a Leo coach.

In the women’s sector, Paulo Reis said that his athletes “also had an excellent championship and that the National Indoor Track Club Championship was marked by the disqualification of the Leo athlete from the march.

“We didn’t even have the chance to reach the end. In the worst case scenario we would have been in second place, we would have had seven points. We lost by three [na classificação final]therefore, we would win with some comfort”, he argued.

On the other hand, the injuries that affect Sporting’s starting team in the women’s sector also contributed, according to the director, to this year’s classification.

“We have five athletes who are unable to compete”, he noted.

Asked by Lusa about the reason that led Sporting officials to formalize a protest in the men’s sector – and which led to the announcement of the final results and the podium ceremony being delayed by more than 30 minutes -, Paulo Reis alluded to a situation led by a Benfica athlete, who competed “all in black”, without the club’s shirt, which, according to regulations, could lead to disqualification.

However, according to Paulo Reis, the protest was rejected, allegedly because the judges had not warned the Benfica athlete of this non-compliance.

Benfica Dominates BPI League with Victorious Return After Champions League Triumph

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com December 18, 2023

After the Champions League triumph against E. Frankfurt, Benfica returned to winning ways in the BPI League. It was a return to normality for the three-time national champions, who in the previous round had lost the derby with Sporting and, unsurprisingly, picked up three more points on their trip to Minho.

Against a Länk Vilaverdense team that is in last place, still without points, the eagles had the perfect game, combining another victory with the physical management promoted by Filipa Patão with a view to the next commitments.

After several dangerous attacks, with goalkeeper Letícia denying the inevitable, Benfica took the lead with a header from Andrea Falcón (28′). The hardest part was done and, 3 minutes later, Kika Nazareth doubled the lead following a corner. Close to half-time, the Portuguese international put on a show in Vila Verde: she dominated the ball with an exquisite reception, isolated herself and made a perfect hat to Letícia.

At the beginning of the 2nd half, another goal from the Eagles appeared, this time from a penalty that Marta Cintra scored. Between balls hitting the post, more wasted opportunities, crucial saves from Letícia and a Länk Vilaverdense that was dragging itself on the field without any arguments for reaction, Benfica completely dominated and didn’t even need to make an effort.

Aware of the facilities and the difference in quality, the Benfica coach gave minutes to less used players, but still saw the Spaniard Andrea Falcón score twice (70′) and award the defeat by a handful.

Benfica vs. Sporting: Benfica Dominates with 8-1 Victory in Women’s Futsal League

This Monday, Benfica beat Sporting, 8-1, in the 13th round of the 1st phase of the women’s futsal league. An impeccable first half from the Reds, who were leading 7-0 at half-time – after goals from Inês Fernandes (4′), Fifó (7′), Janice Silva (14′), Sara Ferreira (17′), Angélica Alves (19′), Maria Pereira (20′) and Raquel Santos (20′) – proved decisive.

In the second half, the eagles would score again through Sara Ferreira (24′), with Júlia Santos scoring, in the same minute of the game, the only goal for the lionesses on the trip to Pavilhão da Luz.

With this result, Benfica remains isolated at the top of the league table, now with 39 points, three more than Nun’Álvares (36). Sporting is ranked 7th, with the same 18 points they had at the start of this round.

In the next round, Benfica will face Santa Luzia, while Sporting will host Águias de Santa Marta.
