The comedian, fresh off her departure from Saturday Night Live and a role in Amazon Prime Video’s Barbershop series, will follow in the footsteps of former host Aidy Bryant, who led the awards display in 2024 and 2025.
Nwodim downplayed any deliberate career trajectory following her exit from SNL, telling reporters, “I’m just in pursuit of fun at all times.” She described the Spirit Awards opportunity as a spontaneous decision, prompted by an email from her agents. Despite the consecutive hosting stint by Bryant, Nwodim dismissed the idea of a formal pipeline between the late-night sketch show and the independent film celebration. “We’ll have to ask Film Independent about that,” she quipped, even as acknowledging a shared appreciation for the freedom inherent in independent filmmaking. “I love any movie that is either heartbreaking or has an ending that leaves you with a lot of questions,” she said.
The 2026 Spirit Awards will also be livestreamed on the YouTube channels of both IMDb and Film Independent, as well as across Film Independent’s social media platforms, according to Wikipedia. This year’s nominations, announced in December 2025, saw Peter Hujar’s Day leading the film categories with five nominations, while Adolescence, Forever, and Mr Loverman each garnered four nominations in the television categories.
Nwodim’s preparation for the hosting gig comes after a recent, intensive experience: a week-long, one-woman show at Lincoln Center in November. She described the experience as nerve-wracking, particularly due to the entirely self-authored nature of the material. “I was shitting bricks since it was an hour of just me,” she admitted. “I wrote the show, honest to God, hand to the man, up until I was going onstage.” The performance, however, proved to be a valuable exercise in overcoming stage fright and building confidence, a skill she anticipates will be useful on the Spirit Awards stage.
The comedian is also considering incorporating material from her Lincoln Center show into an upcoming performance as part of Netflix’s “Is a Joke” festival in May, though she remains characteristically indecisive. “It may or may not be part of my Netflix Is a Joke show,” she said, clarifying that her uncertainty wasn’t a deliberate tease, but rather a reflection of her last-minute approach to planning.
Nwodim’s one-woman show, surprisingly, featured a character, despite her recent transition to performing as herself after years of inhabiting various roles on SNL. She described a blurring of lines between her persona and the character, stating, “Me and the character felt like one. Genuinely.” She added that the show involved a deliberately vulnerable opening, beginning “essentially naked,” and lacking the safety net of credited writers that she enjoyed on SNL. “So if you don’t like this stuff it’s like, damn, you hate my guts,” she joked.
When asked which of her SNL characters she anticipates will remain most memorable, Nwodim pointed to Lisa from Temecula and Miss Eggy as frontrunners, while also acknowledging the occasional shout-out to her character Entrée PeeE Neur from her perform on Comedy Bang Bang.
Regarding the potential for uncensored humor during the ceremony, Nwodim adopted a “don’t ask permission, ask forgiveness” approach. “I didn’t ask permission. I cuss a lot in real life, so we’ll have to see if it’s allowed,” she said. While she rarely experiences starstruck moments, she admitted that an encounter with Eddie Murphy recently left her surprised and delighted. She also expressed a desire to meet President Barack Obama, stating, “I’m working on it. I really am. I see it happening for me.”
