Several Injured in โคSouth Side Crash Following Reported Street Racing; Neighbors demand action
A head-onโ collision on Pleasanton โขRoad sent โsix people to hospitals with injuries โafter one driver allegedly โขraced anotherโ and โฃthen fled โคthe scene, according to San Antonio Police Department (SAPD). The crashโ occurred as drivers were travelingโ northbound on โthe roadway. Four people were initially reported asโข hospitalized, but SAPD later confirmed six injuries.
Residents โnear the crash site say dangerous speeding and illegal racing are rampantโ in the โคarea, contributing to aโ climate of fear and,โ tragically, loss. The incident has renewed calls for increased โฃlaw enforcement presence and trafficโ calming measures โonโฃ Pleasanton road,โข whereโข neighbors report frequent โคreckless driving, โeven withโข vehicles traveling the wrong way.
Neighbors told KSAT they weren’t surprised โฃby โthe โฃcrash,citingโ regular occurrences of speeding. “There’s no lights out here,”โฃ said Mikayla, a resident of the area. “It’s bad, like people speed like crazy out here.” Another resident reportedโข the โคloss ofโ aโ dog due to speeding drivers.
Witnesses described racers using both theโ northbound and โขsouthbound lanes inโค the same direction, meaning one vehicle โis frequently enough driving against traffic. Nicholas hernandez stated,”I would like toโ have a cop outโ here most of the time cause there’s a lot of likeโฃ -โ at night,I hear just ‘whoosh whoosh’ back and forth,” referencing theโฃ speed of vehicles.
A KSAT investigationโฃ using a Bushnell radar gun recorded drivers โexceeding the speed limit by as muchโ as 29 mph – โreaching 69 mph in aโค 40 mph zone โขnear an โฃintersection with a flashing yellow light. โMikayla added, “you can hear a lot โof just brakes, and it’s scaryโฆI hate it, like it’s bad. I will neverโค drive, I will never. It’s just scary out here.”
SAPD has not โคreleased โฃfurther information regarding the driver who left โฃthe scene.
