After attack in Munich: NS Documentation Center cancels exhibition opening – Munich

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com September 10, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Following the suspected Islamist attack last Thursday, the National Socialist Documentation Center canceled the ceremonial opening of the installation “We are here” by artist Talya Feldman on Tuesday evening. The exhibition will feature videos to which relatives of victims of racist and anti-Semitic attacks have recorded texts. At the request of the artist and the relatives who were supposed to take part in the opening, a joint decision was made to forego the event, explained a spokeswoman for the National Socialist Documentation Center.

The 18-year-old attacker’s shots at the documentation center and the nearby Israeli consulate general would place too much emotional strain on those involved in the planned opening ceremony, said the spokeswoman. There was great understanding for this. Objective security concerns were not the reason for the cancellation. “It is very important to us that everyone involved feels safe and ready to speak to a broad public.”

Originally, the director of the NS Documentation Center, Miriam Zadoff, as well as the artist and a representative of the “Initiative Munich OEZ Erinnern” were supposed to speak. The racist attack at the Olympia shopping center on July 22, 2016, in which the right-wing extremist David S., also 18 years old at the time, murdered nine people, is part of the video installation.

As planned, this will be on display for visitors to the NS Documentation Center from Wednesday. In it, Talya Feldman recalls 15 racist attacks in Germany over the past 40 years. Among them are cases that have not yet been officially recognized as hate crimes, according to the announcement of the exhibition. The relatives of victims have recorded texts to accompany videos in which they describe their suffering and campaign for a lively and appropriate remembrance. For them, this includes memorials and renaming streets as well as the right to “be heard and seen” in order to bring about changes in politics, society, the justice system and law enforcement authorities.

Russia reports attack by 144 Ukrainian drones – also on Moscow

Ukraine apparently launched a major drone attack on Russia overnight. According to official figures, Russian air defense intercepted 144 drones over nine regions – many of which were apparently also targeting Moscow. More than a dozen were shot down in the capital and the surrounding area, said Mayor Sergei Sobyanin and the governor of the Moscow region, Andrei Vorobyov.

Vorobyov alone wrote of 14 drone attacks in various parts of the Moscow region. Dozens of people were reportedly brought to safety. One of the drones is said to have been shot down over the Domodedovo district, where Moscow’s second-largest airport is located. There, as well as at Moscow’s Zhukovsky and Vnukovo airports, air traffic was suspended for around six hours, according to the Russian aviation authority Rosaviatsia. This is to ensure safety after drone attacks. Nothing is known about possible damage so far.

A fire broke out in a residential building in the suburb of Ramenskoye, about 40 kilometers south of Moscow. A 46-year-old woman died, wrote Vorobyov on TelegramReports of the death of a nine-year-old child have not been confirmed.

Drone attacks were also reported in other parts of the country. In the border region of Bryansk, 59 drones were shot down, Governor Alexander Bogomas announced. Several drones were also shot down in the Lipetsk region, several hundred kilometers south of Moscow, the local governor said. There were apparently no damages or injuries in either region, but the information cannot be independently verified. In the Tula region, drone debris is said to have hit and damaged a fuel and energy network.

Another major nighttime attack on Ukraine

The day also began with air raid warnings in large parts of Ukraine. The air force reported that Russia had deployed 46 combat drones and two missiles. Of these, 38 drones were shot down, three more crashed and three left Ukrainian-controlled airspace. Air defense was active in 13 regions, including the capital Kiev. There is currently no information about possible damage.

In a video from a bodycam of a police officer who was present at the operation, Hill can be seen standing on the side of the road in a supercar. A police officer comes to his car, Hill hands the officer something through the lowered window and then rolls it back up again.

The police officer then asks him to roll down the window again, but Hill does not do so. Another police officer then forcefully opens the driver’s door, Hill is pulled out of the car and pressed to the ground. An officer presses his knee into Hill’s back. The 30-year-old is handcuffed.

Dolphins: Officials with misplaced power

“We are proud to have a strong and positive relationship with the Miami-Dade Police Department and other law enforcement agencies and recognize that the vast majority of officers serve the community with the utmost character and a desire to protect all citizens. However, as is clearly seen in the videos released tonight, some officers confuse their responsibility and commitment to duty with misguided power,” the Dolphins wrote.

The NFL club called for swift and forceful action against the officials “who exhibited such despicable behavior” and assured the players that it would stand by them “as they work to use their platform and this situation should have a positive impact on our community.”

An official was initially suspended

Hill, who scored an 80-yard touchdown in the 20-17 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars to start the season, stressed after the game that he had behaved correctly towards the officials: “I was not disrespectful, that’s not how my mother raised me. I didn’t swear, none of that. Like I said, I’m still trying to understand it.” He had never seen anything like it, said Hill’s manager Drew Rosenhaus on ESPN. According to media reports, one of the officials was initially suspended.

According to Hill, he himself was stopped for speeding and reckless driving, reported the American news agency AP.

Austria’s Greens demand stricter gun laws after Munich attack

Austria’s Greens are calling for a tightening of gun laws following the alleged terrorist attack in Munich. “It is unacceptable that an 18-year-old, who is banned from owning a gun, can obtain a firearm without being checked,” the parliamentary group of the governing party was told in the newspaper The standard quoted.

The young Austrian gunman who was killed by the police had, despite the ban, purchased an old rifle and ammunition from a private gun collector. According to Austrian law, it was a Category C weapon. This group includes long guns that are reloaded by hand – i.e. most hunting rifles. Private sellers of such weapons are not obliged to check for a possible weapons ban – unlike professional dealers. In private sales, the weapons can be handed over immediately, whereas in dealers’ cases they can only be handed over after a three-day “cooling off period”.

“The Interior Minister is called upon to introduce significant tightening measures, including a general ban on private arms sales,” said the Greens. The demand is directed at the Chancellor’s party, the ÖVP, which has Gerhard Karner as Interior Minister. The Conservatives and the Greens have been governing in a coalition for five years. A new parliament will be elected at the end of September.

ÖVP General Secretary Christian Stocker signalled his willingness to examine possible loopholes in the law. He rejected the idea of putting an end to private arms sales. Standard However, after the shooting near the Israeli consulate and the NS Documentation Center, the ÖVP again called for expanded powers to monitor electronic messages in order to combat extremism.

Hills manager: “Completely unnecessary”

Hill’s journey to the stadium was eventful. Police briefly detained the 30-year-old wide receiver because he was involved in a traffic incident, the Dolphins announced before kickoff.

In a video posted on Platform X, Hill can be seen lying face down on the ground while four officers surround him, place his hands behind his back and appear to handcuff him. The incident occurred outside the Dolphins’ home stadium, Hard Rock Stadium.

One of Hill’s teammates was also handcuffed

In the evening it was announced that an official had been suspended from duty following an investigation. “That tells you everything you need to know,” commented Hill when he heard about it after the game. Calais Campbell, Hill’s teammate, who tried to help him and was himself handcuffed for a short time, said: “That makes sense.” In his opinion the situation was “extreme.”

Hill insisted he had behaved correctly towards the officers: “I was not disrespectful, that’s not how my mother raised me. I didn’t swear, none of that. Like I said, I’m still trying to understand that.”

Hill’s manager Drew Rosenhaus told ESPN about the moving images of the arrest that were circulating: “This is crazy, I’ve never seen anything like it.” For him, the police’s actions were “completely unnecessary.” But the most important thing is “that Tyreek is OK, physically and mentally.”

Six field goals for Steelers kicker Boswell

With Justin Fields as quarterback, the Pittsburgh Steelers won 18:10 against the Atlanta Falcons. However, the team had to thank not the young playmaker, who now has the advantage in the duel with the injured Russell Wilson, but kicker Chris Boswell: He made six field goals and scored all of the visitors’ points.

In Caleb Williams’ NFL debut, the Chicago Bears celebrated a 24:17 win against the Tennessee Titans. However, the offense was only partially responsible for the success: the Bears defense scored two touchdowns and two field goals.

Nations League: England wins with new coach – the Netherlands also wins – Sport

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com September 8, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

The English national team has given interim coach Lee Carsley a successful debut. In the first game after losing the European Championship final against Spain, the Three Lions beat Ireland 2-0 (2-0) at the start of the Nations League in Dublin. The former Irish international Carsley took over the coaching position in England as an interim solution after Gareth Southgate resigned.

Declan Rice scored the first goal for the English team, including captain Harry Kane from FC Bayern Munich, in the 11th minute. A quarter of an hour later, Jack Grealish increased the lead to 2-0. Grealish was not selected for the European Championship by former coach Southgate, but the offensive player is back in the starting line-up under Carsley.

SZ PlusExclusiveJonathan Tah in an interview:“In the end, the player suffers”

Jonathan Tah has had an emotional summer with the European Championship at home and wild transfer speculation. In an interview, the national player explains why he wanted to leave Bayer Leverkusen – and why he will not extend his contract now.

Interview by Christof Kneer, Philipp Selldorf

Both goalscorers, like Carsley, played for Ireland when they were young. This led to protests against the footballers in Dublin’s stadium. A fan banner showed the faces of Rice and Grealish next to the words: “The snakes are back.” During the game, the English players wore black armbands in honor of their coach, Sven-Göran Eriksson, who died at the end of August. The Swede was coach of the English national team from 2001 to 2006.

DFB opponent Netherlands defeats Bosnia

The Dutch The national football team started the Nations League with a spectacle, with national coach Ronald Koeman’s team offering exciting offensive football in a 5:2 (2:1) win against Bosnia and Herzegovina – albeit with defensive deficiencies. On Tuesday (8.45 p.m./RTL), the Oranje will be the German team’s next opponent in Amsterdam.

Former Munich player Joshua Zirkzee gave the clearly superior hosts an early lead on his debut in the starting eleven in Eindhoven when he headed on a cross from Leipzig’s Xavi Simons (12′). A “German” co-production provided the surprising equaliser: After a pass from Cologne’s Denis Huseinbajic, Stuttgart’s Ermedin Demirovic scored (27′).

Then Oranje were unlucky at first: After a great one-two with Zirkzee, Tijjani Reijnders hit the crossbar (42′). In stoppage time of the first half, the AC Milan midfielder did better and scored the well-deserved 2-1 again with a pass from Zirkzee (45’+2). Reijnders was the brilliant assist for Cody Gakpo’s 3-1 (56′). Edin Dzeko used the visitors’ second chance to score the second goal (73′). Substitute Wout Weghorst (88′) and Simons (90’+2) finally decided the match.
