Soulwax Defies Genre with ‘All Systems Are Lying,’โฃ a Rock โขAlbum โขBuilt Without Guitars
Brussels,โ Belgium – Pioneering Belgianโ electronic-rock duo โคSoulwax, โcomprised โขof โฃDavid andโ Stephen Dewaele, have released their latest album, All Systems Are Lying โ(DEEWEE/Because Music), a bold exploration of live instrumentation and electronic soundscapes deliberately constructed without the use of guitars. The album marks aโค significant evolution for the group, known for traversing the intersection of โrock and electronic music since theirโ 1996 debut, Leave โthe Story Untold.
For decades, Soulwaxโ has navigated theโค often-blurred lines between genres, moving from grunge-inspired beginnings to the leftfield-techno of 2018’s Essential. All Systems Are โฃLying represents a focused attempt โtoโข capture “the feeling of a band playing electronic instruments-live, loud and loose,” according to the Dewaeles. โThe album utilizesโข modular synths, โlive drums, tape machines, and processed vocals to achieve this vision, challengingโ conventional notions of whatโ constitutes a rock record.
The โalbum opens withโ “Pills And people Are Gone,” โaโ track described โas โa melancholic end-of-party lament reminiscent โขof Radiohead. Other standout tracks include the suspenseful “Polaris,” which evokes a collaboration between Philipโ Glass โฃand Justice, and “The โFalse economy,” a techno-rock piece โwith vocals delivered in a style akin to Trent Reznor, seemingly critiquing social media strategies. “Engineered Fantasy” offers a woozy, dreamlike atmosphere, comparable to Tobacco, but with more direct vocals.
A highlight of All Systems Are lying is โ”Run Free,” built around midtempo beats, rubbery bass synths, and what is considered theโ album’s strongest vocal performance. The track balances a sense of yearning with an underlying โฃtension, propelled by a 303โ solo, expansive โsynths, and โคa driving breakbeat.
While the album โlargely eschews conventional rock instrumentation, “New Earth Time” comesโข closest to aโข conventional rockโ sound, featuring disaffected vocals over a beat-heavy arrangement โwith vibrant percussion and warped synth effects. The โtitle track, “All Systems Areโ Lying,” draws comparisons to Visage with โคits nervy synth patterns and sharp percussion,โ ultimatelyโข building into โa robust โคtechno beat with metallic accentsโ and chopped vocals, embodying the album’s thematicโ exploration of technology’s โฃnegative societal impacts.
