Indonesian YouTuber Nessie Judge is at the center of the spotlight after one of her latest Halloween content was deemed insensitive by Japanese netizens. This controversy arose because in a collaboration video with the K-Pop group NCT Dream in the #NERROR segment, Nessie displayed a photo of Junko Furuta as part of the background decoration.
The use of this photo was deemed unethical and offended the victim’s memory, sparking a heated debate on the X platform between Indonesian and Japanese netizens.
Junko Furuta is a victim of a case of kidnapping, torture, rape and murder that occurred in 1988 in Japan. This case is known as one of the most brutal acts of violence ever documented, and is still a sensitive social wound in Japan. Because of this, many Japanese netizens consider the use of Junko’s photos as decorative ornaments in Halloween content unacceptable.

Responding to increasingly heated criticism, Nessie Judge initially clarified that the use of the photo was intended as a form of respect for the source of the case which had previously been discussed on her channel.
“Hi everybody. I have listened and understand your concerns regarding the previously uploaded video. What we thought was a form of respect, has been corrected by everyone as rude and insensitive. We sincerely apologize for our lack of consideration,” said Nessie on her social media account.
“Yesterday, after I realized the full extent of the problem, I immediately deleted everything and sat down with my team to reflect on our actions. While this certainly doesn’t erase what happened, please know that we learned from our mistakes and are committed to changing our processes,” he continued.
“We sincerely apologize to the victim, the victim’s family, our viewers and collaborators, and everyone. While we never intended to cause harm, I understand that the impact of our actions is far more important. Thank you for reminding us and holding us accountable,said Nessie.

Even though Nessie has given an apology, this case has become a widespread debate between Japanese and Indonesian netizens. Several netizens from the Land of the Rising Sun took advantage of this moment to poke fun at the issue of Indonesia-Japan bilateral history.
For example, the account @sara_sachiko. he commented on the contribution of the Japanese army in post-World War II Indonesia to fight Dutch colonialism.
“In order to liberate Indonesia from Dutch colonialism, 2,000 Japanese soldiers remained in Indonesia and fought for four years after World War II. Using victims as props is completely unacceptable. Especially if we know the background of the perpetrators,” he said.
This sparked a backlash from Indonesian netizens, who felt the comments were irrelevant and actually demeaned the nation.
“It’s nice of you, Nippon, to use the Nessie case as an opportunity to humiliate Indonesia, at least ask your country to apologize to Southeast and East Asian countries,” said @user0abc1230.
“Help liberate Indonesia from Dutch colonialism? Lol, dude. Your country is doing the same thing as the Netherlands. Committing crimes that are slightly worse than what the Netherlands did,” replied @RayhanJAgst.
“Sorry, what? I know what Nessie did was wrong, but saying you came to liberate Indonesia from the Dutch is truly delusional. You were our colonialists, just like the Dutch, maybe even worse. Your country really committed war crimes throughout Asia,” said @pyrooolaf.
