BEAVERTON, OR – nike is stepping into the future of footwear with a new collaboration with robotics firm Dephy, developing shoes equipped with robotic assistance designed too enhance the running, jogging, and walking experience for everyday users.
A Subtle Boost for Increased Activity
The shoes, featuring a strap system around the lower legs, provide a noticeable, yet subtle, boost with each stride. Nike positions this technology as analogous to an electric bicycle - making exercise more accessible and enjoyable.
“It makes it easier to cycle further or more often,” Nike stated in a press release. “We hope to achieve the same with the robot shoes – that people exercise more often, and have more fun doing it. so that you can walk further to work, or make your running session a few kilometers longer.”
Early testing indicates a tangible performance betterment. Users who typically complete a mile (1.6 kilometers) in 12 minutes have reportedly reduced thier time to 10 minutes while wearing the robotic shoes.
Targeting the everyday Athlete
Unlike many performance-enhancing technologies, thes shoes are specifically designed for non-professional athletes. Nike aims to broaden participation in physical activity by reducing the perceived effort required for running and walking.
the shoes are currently in the testing phase, with Nike anticipating a market release “in the coming years.”
