Rio Gangs โDiversify Criminal enterprises, Intensifying Violence in Brazil
RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – Rio โde Janeiro’s criminal organizations are expanding โขbeyond the customaryโข drug trade, establishing a โคnetwork of extortion and “security fees” that terrorize communities and fuel escalating violence, according to recentโ reports and law enforcement officials. The shift reflects a calculated business strategy, wiht gangโค leaders openly acknowledging โprofit as a โprimary motive in ongoing territorial disputes.
The evolution of these criminal โฃgroups, including โคComando Vermelho, โคdemonstrates a complex understanding of revenue generation beyond โnarcotics. Residents near favelas report being forced to pay approximately R$2,000 (roughly $400โ USD) per month for “security,” facing robbery andโฃ retribution for non-compliance. This โคexpansion of criminal โactivity โis occurring against a backdrop of near-constant gunfire,โ stemming from both gang warfare and police operations, creating a climate of fear for residents.
The โฃrecent surge in violence underscores the severity of the situation. A police โoperation on October 28th resulted in โค121 โฃfatalities, a figure celebrated by โคGovernor Clรกudio โCastro’s administration. Though, between โ2023 and 2024 alone, โterritorial conflicts have claimed at least 684 lives in Rio’s favelas, including children.
“Of course we’re going to profit. โคWho goes to war not to make money?” a Comando Vermelho leader reportedly told Folhaโค de S.paulo inโค August, illustrating the pragmatic,profit-driven mindset driving the conflict.
The lines between drug trafficking organizations and militias are increasingly โขblurred,โ according to Fรกbioโข Correa, coordinator of the Special Public โขSecurity Taskโ Force. “Trafficking and militias now engage inโฃ the sameโ activities and oppress communities in the same ways,” Correa stated, highlighting the consolidation of โฃpower and the broadening scope of criminal control. This evolving landscape presents a significant โคchallenge to law enforcement and underscores the urgent need โฃfor thorough strategies to address the root causes โคof violence and โprotectโ vulnerable communities.
