WWE Legend โขPapa Shango Explains WrestleMania VIII Ring Entrance Delay
WWE Hall of Famer Charles Wright, known as Theโค Godfather and โฃpreviously as Papaโ Shango, recently revealed the reason for his โคdelayed entrance during the โWrestleMania VIII main event between Hulk Hogan and Sid Justice. Speaking on his “Poddin’ Ain’t Easy” podcast, โฃWright clarified that he received no backstage reprimand forโฃ the incident, attributing the timing issue to a miscalculation of travel โคtime.
“Honestly, I never heard one โขword about it from not one person untilโ later,” Wright stated. “The problem wasโฆโฃ somebody โshould have timed โคhow long it was going to take [me] to run that distanceโฆ I didn’tโค send myself. they โขtold me, ‘Don’t go โคtill we send you.’ And ifโ you look at the video, I’m running as fast as I can.”
Wright also discussed his overall positive workingโ relationship with The โฃUltimate Warrior, who was the target of Papa Shango’s memorable “voodoo curse”โ storyline. “I’m one of the few guys I got no shit to talk aboutโฆ He was cool with me. I liked working with him,” Wright said. “Come on, dude, this guy’s aโ world champion putting over voodoo and shit.โฃ Forโ him justโข to do thatโฆ I ain’t mad at it. โHe didn’t have to.”
The character of Papa Shango intentionally aimed โขto frighten audiences, Wright recalled. โค”I told Vinceโฆ ‘letโข me go after kids’,” he said. “I would say somethingโฆโ ‘and tonight, when you go toโค sleep, you will not dream ofโ the ocean. You will dream of death, and you will dream of Papa Shango.’ I used to scare the hell out of kids.” He cited an instance in White Plains, New york, where protestors picketed an arenaโ due to the character’s impact on children.
Wright further emphasizedโ that his departures from WWEโข were โฃalways voluntary. “Every time โI โขwas never let goโฆ I would leave,” he stated. He explained that his decisionโข to step away from the Papa Shango โขpersona stemmed from personal challenges, specifically “going through a bad divorce” and finding that his “motorcycle, biker, bear” persona wasโ contributing to “bad situations” inโค his personal life, leadingโฃ him to believe it was “best that I bowed out” to focus on his well-being.If you use any portion โขof the quotes from this article please credit AdFreeShows.com with a h/t to WrestlingNews.co for โthe transcription.
