Andrea โDoan โto Lead โขCommitteeโฃ Exploring Return โขof NHL Hockey to Phoenix
PHOENIX, AZ โ- Andrea Doan, wife of former NHL star Shane Doan, โคhas been appointed chair of a newly formed exploratory committee tasked with bringing a National Hockey League franchise back to Maricopa County, Arizona. โขThe โฃannouncement comes after Board โof Supervisors chair Tom Galvin publicly expressed his desire for such โขa committee inโ early January.
The committee’s formation marks a renewed effort to secure a permanent NHL presenceโ in Phoenix, โa โmarket the league has long sought to cultivate. Whileโข the city previously housed the Arizona Coyotes, ownership issues led to the team’s intellectual property being dissolvedโฃ inโฃ mid-july 2023โฃ and โreverting to NHL control.
The Doan family โฃis deeply ingrainedโข in Arizona hockey โhistory, often โreferred to as the “royal family” of the sport in the โคregion. Though shane Doan currently โฃserves as a special assistant to the General Manager of the Torontoโ Maple Leafs, preventing his formal involvement, Andreaโฃ will spearheadโ the family’s efforts.
“Whatever Shane and I do we are always doing together anyway, but โขhis โฃcommitment right now is โto โToronto,” Andrea Doan stated. “So โis mine, butโข this isโฃ sort of a separate entity; just workingโค with the NHL andโฃ trying to bring the association backโ to Phoenix were โฃit belongs and where it can thrive and succeed.”
The committeeโ faces significant challenges, including identifyingโข a committed ownership โขgroup and securing suitable land for a potential arena. Mat โishbia, majorityโข owner of theโ Phoenix Suns and phoenix Mercury, has publicly โขexpressed interest inโ bringingโฃ hockey โback to the desert. โข
NHL Commissionerโ Gary Bettman has indicated the league will evaluate all potential expansion opportunities fairly, with โcompeting โbids emerging from Houston, Texas, and Atlanta, โขGeorgia. Though, Bettman’s past actions suggestโ a continued interest in establishing a successful franchise in Phoenix.
despiteโค the โhurdles, the committee believesโ the Doan โคfamily’s โคstrong community ties will be instrumental in generating public support and persuading the NHL toโข consider โขanother opportunity forโ hockey in Arizona.
