US & Canada Dominate Olympic Hockey: Quarterfinal Matchups Set

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor February 16, 2026
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

MILAN (AP) — Matthew Tkachuk’s verbal jab at Leon Draisaitl during Sunday night’s USA-Germany Olympic hockey game has quickly become a talking point, overshadowing the Americans’ dominant 5-1 victory and their subsequent claim to the second seed in the knockout round. The exchange, captured by a hot microphone, saw Tkachuk repeatedly taunt Draisaitl with the phrase, “Always the bridesmaid, eh Leon? Always the bridesmaid, never the bride.”

The barb, referencing the Florida Panthers’ consecutive Stanley Cup Final victories over Draisaitl’s Edmonton Oilers in 2024 and 2025, landed during the second period as the two teams were heading to the bench. Tkachuk’s brother, Brady, stood nearby as he delivered the line, according to multiple reports. The moment quickly circulated on social media, with a clip posted by 10,000 Takes garnering significant attention.

“It’s always a challenge,” Tkachuk said after the game, as reported by Bleacher Report, when asked about playing against Draisaitl. “Our teams have some history. And (it’s) always fun playing him.” He also acknowledged that such exchanges aren’t typical between the two players, but Sunday’s game presented a unique opportunity. “I wouldn’t say so,” Tkachuk said. “Some guys, you’ve got to play harder than most physically, and maybe after the whistle sometimes, too.”

The U.S. Victory, fueled by two goals and an assist from captain Auston Matthews and 23 saves from goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, secured their position as the second seed in the tournament. The Americans finished group play unbeaten. Canada, after a resounding 10-2 win over France, claimed the top seed, meaning the two North American rivals won’t meet until a potential gold medal game.

Despite Canada’s dominant performance, the U.S. Team maintained they weren’t focused on chasing the top seed. “We never talked once about the top seed at all,” Tkachuk insisted. “None of that seeding stuff. All that handles itself.”

The U.S. Will now face the winner of Tuesday’s qualification round game between Sweden and Latvia in the quarterfinals. Sweden, despite winning two of its three preliminary round games, was relegated to seventh seed due to a goal differential tiebreaker. Defenseman Zach Werenski acknowledged the challenge Sweden presents, describing them as a “super-skilled team” with “a lot of talent.”

Elsewhere, Switzerland secured an easier path to the quarterfinals by defeating Czechia 4-3 in overtime, a victory particularly poignant given the absence of injured winger Kevin Fiala. Captain Roman Josi scored the opening goal for Switzerland, and Dean Kukan netted the overtime winner. Fiala, recovering from a lower leg injury, sent a video message to his teammates from the hospital, expressing his continued support.

In another contest, Denmark earned its first victory of the tournament with a 4-2 win over Latvia, largely thanks to a stellar 33-save performance by longtime NHL goaltender Frederik Andersen. The win positioned Denmark ahead of Latvia in the seeding, sending Latvia to face Sweden in the qualification round.

Canada’s victory over France was marked by both offensive firepower and a display of team loyalty. Sidney Crosby and Connor McDavid each contributed a goal and two assists, whereas Tom Wilson engaged in a fight after a hit on Nathan MacKinnon, earning a game misconduct but garnering praise from teammates for standing up for a colleague. Macklin Celebrini, Canada’s youngest player, also impressed with two goals, including a penalty shot.

North Korea Builds Housing for Soldiers Killed Fighting in Ukraine

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor February 16, 2026

North Korea has completed construction of a recent housing district in Pyongyang intended for families of North Korean soldiers believed to have been killed fighting alongside Russian forces in Ukraine, state media reported Monday. The development, dubbed Saeppyol Street, was unveiled by leader Kim Jong Un, who toured the new homes accompanied by his daughter, reportedly named Kim Ju Ae, and pledged support for the families of those he called “young martyrs.”

The opening of the housing district represents the latest in a series of actions by North Korea to honor soldiers deployed to Ukraine, including the establishment of a memorial wall and the construction of a museum, according to reports. These efforts appear to be aimed at bolstering internal unity and potentially mitigating any public discontent related to the country’s involvement in the conflict, analysts suggest.

South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) estimates that approximately 6,000 North Korean troops have been killed or wounded in Ukraine, according to a briefing to lawmakers last week. This figure is a significant increase from the NIS’s previous estimate of around 600 deaths reported last year. The agency has not provided a detailed breakdown of the casualties.

The NIS also believes that North Korean forces are gaining valuable combat experience and benefiting from Russian technical support, which could potentially enhance the performance of their weapons systems, lawmakers who attended the briefing stated. This assessment suggests that North Korea views its involvement in the Ukraine war as an opportunity to modernize its military capabilities.

Kim Jong Un’s decision to send troops and military equipment to Russia underscores a growing alignment between the two countries, particularly in the face of their respective tensions with the United States. The scale of North Korea’s support for Russia includes artillery and missiles, fueling President Vladimir Putin’s war effort.

The construction of Saeppyol Street coincides with preparations for a major ruling party congress later this month, where Kim is expected to outline his domestic and foreign policy objectives for the next five years and further consolidate his authority. The congress is anticipated to provide further insight into North Korea’s strategic priorities and its evolving relationship with Russia.

NBA All-Star Game 2024: New Format, Wembanyama & Concerns | AP News

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor February 15, 2026
written by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

INGLEWOOD, Calif. — Victor Wembanyama, the San Antonio Spurs’ rookie sensation, has pledged to bring a competitive edge to Sunday’s NBA All-Star Game, despite skepticism from some of his fellow players about the potential for genuine intensity in the midseason exhibition. The game will debut a new format, dividing players into teams representing the United States and the rest of the world, in a round-robin tournament culminating in a final match.

Wembanyama, speaking Saturday during media day at the Intuit Dome, the Clippers’ newly opened $2 billion arena, emphasized the importance of energy and shared responsibility. “Exclamation-point plays, playing in a solid manner and sharing the ball with energy,” he said. “If you share that energy, people feel like they have a responsibility to share it back to you.”

The NBA has experimented with various All-Star Game formats in recent years, seeking to address concerns about a lack of competitive spirit. The league abandoned the traditional East versus West format in 2018, opting for a captain-led draft system for six seasons before briefly returning to the conference matchup last year. In 2025, a four-team tournament was held in San Francisco. This year’s shift to a U.S. Versus the World structure represents the fourth format change in as many years.

Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards, who played for France against the U.S. In the gold medal game at the 2024 Paris Olympics, expressed doubt that the All-Star Game could replicate that level of intensity. “That was the Olympics. It’s just that simple,” Edwards said.

Sixteen-time All-Star Kevin Durant echoed that sentiment, suggesting that criticisms of the All-Star Game often stem from unmet expectations. “I just feel like fans and media need something to complain about, and the All-Star Game don’t make them feel like they felt when they were kids,” Durant said.

Despite the reservations of some players, NBA officials are optimistic that the new format will foster a more competitive atmosphere. Detroit Pistons coach J.B. Bickerstaff, who will coach the youngest American team dubbed the “Stars,” stated he has spoken with his players and they are committed to competing. “They’re going to set the tone. I know that for a fact, and I know that the group we have is a group of competitors,” Bickerstaff said. The older American team is known as the “Bars.”

The Rest of the World team boasts a strong lineup including Wembanyama, Slovenia’s Luka Dončić, and Serbia’s Nikola Jokić. But, the team also includes players with complex national affiliations, such as Norman Powell, born and raised in California but playing internationally for Jamaica, and Karl-Anthony Towns, who represents the Dominican Republic, the country of his mother’s origin.

The All-Star weekend also featured Damian Lillard’s third career victory in the Three-Point Contest and Keshad Johnson of the Miami Heat winning the Dunk Contest.
