Mexico 2026 World Cup: Security Concerns Rise 100 Days Out

by Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor March 3, 2026
written by Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor

One hundred days before the opening of the 2026 World Cup, Mexico is accelerating its preparations, with security now the primary concern following a surge of violence in several cities after the reported death of Nemesio Rubén Guzmán, known as “El Mencho,” alleged leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).

The escalating violence presents a significant challenge to Mexico’s ability to host the tournament, co-staged with the United States and Canada. Concerns are mounting among fans, particularly those traveling from the U.S., regarding safety and security during the event. The Los Angeles Times reported on the renewed debate among fans regarding the viability of holding World Cup matches in Mexico given the recent unrest.

While authorities have not officially confirmed El Mencho’s death, the reported event has triggered clashes between the CJNG and other criminal organizations, as well as increased confrontations with Mexican security forces. CNN en Español reported that the potential fallout from El Mencho’s demise extends beyond Mexico, raising the possibility of increased violence between cartels in Ecuador and Colombia.

Security officials are working to implement enhanced security measures in host cities, including increased police presence, surveillance technology, and coordination with international law enforcement agencies. Still, the scale of the challenge is considerable, as the CJNG has a significant presence in several states slated to host World Cup matches. France 24 noted that El Mencho’s influence extended beyond typical cartel operations, complicating efforts to contain the ensuing violence.

The New York Times reported on the immediate aftermath of the reported death, detailing the increased military presence in key areas. The Mexican government has yet to issue a comprehensive statement addressing the security implications for the World Cup, maintaining a cautious approach as the situation continues to evolve.

The potential for further violence raises questions about the ability of Mexican authorities to guarantee the safety of players, fans, and officials during the tournament. FIFA and the joint World Cup organizing committee have not yet publicly commented on the situation, but are reportedly monitoring developments closely. No immediate changes to the schedule or security protocols have been announced.

Top Clinic Coverage: Peace of Mind for You & Your Family

by Priya Shah – Business Editor February 24, 2026
written by Priya Shah – Business Editor

Colombia’s Clínica del Country, a leading private healthcare institution in Bogotá, has long been recognized for pioneering medical techniques. In 2025, the clinic completed an expansion of its technology, including the purchase of a Positron Emission Tomograph (PET) scanner, adding to its existing Angiograph and computed tomography capabilities, according to a timeline published by the institution.

Founded in 1962, Clínica del Country has consistently introduced advanced medical technologies to Colombia. It was the first in the country to implement intravenous anesthesia in 1968, and later, the first in Bogotá to install magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in 1989. The clinic received the National Medicine Award for its early adoption of laparoscopic surgery, a technique that has since become standard practice and has been used to train generations of surgeons, as noted in a history of the clinic.

The institution, located in the ‘Antiguo Country’ neighborhood of Chapinero, Bogotá, currently handles over 137,000 emergency cases and approximately 3,000 births annually. In 2007, the clinic inaugurated a new unit on Carrera 16, equipped with state-of-the-art technology. A research center followed in 2008.

In 2009, Clínica del Country became part of Banmédica, a Chilean healthcare and insurance group. The clinic also initiated a renal transplant program that same year. Further expansion occurred in 2011 with the opening of the Centro de Oncología, specializing in breast cancer treatment.

The clinic’s contributions to Colombian medicine were formally recognized in 2018 when it was awarded the Cruz de Boyacá, Silver Cross, for its service to the nation. The District Council also presented the Orden al Mérito José Acevedo y Gómez, Grand Cross, in acknowledgement of its contributions to the capital district.

As of May 10, 2024, Clínica del Country emphasized its commitment to patient safety, outlining protocols for emergency situations and encouraging patients to familiarize themselves with evacuation routes, according to a recent notice on the clinic’s website.

Colo Colo vs La U: Security Plan for 2026 Superclásico at Monumental Stadium

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor February 24, 2026
written by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Authorities have confirmed a capacity of 42,000 attendees for the upcoming Superclásico between Colo Colo and Universidad de Chile on March 1st, 2026, at Estadio Monumental in Santiago, Chile. The decision follows a review of security protocols prompted by incidents involving Universidad de Chile supporters at a January 30th match against Audax Italiano.

The Metropolitan Regional Presidential Delegate, Gonzalo Durán, led a technical meeting on Tuesday with representatives from the municipalities of Macul, San Joaquín, and La Florida, as well as specialized units of the Carabineros (OS10 and OS13), and Blanco y Negro, the concessionaire administering Colo Colo. The meeting focused on ensuring a secure environment for the highly anticipated match, the first official Superclásico of the 2026 season.

“All necessary measures have been taken to prioritize the sporting spectacle above all else,” Durán stated, outlining a perimeter security ring manned by Carabineros to prevent unauthorized access to the stadium grounds. Inside the stadium, a reinforced contingent of private security guards, including tactical personnel, will oversee internal security and access points.

A key component of the security plan is the continued implementation of a turnstile system integrated with facial recognition technology, already utilized in the last three matches held at Estadio Monumental. Gustavo Poblete, Colo Colo’s Operations Manager, described the technology as part of a broader modernization effort aimed at improving the fan experience and ensuring full identification of those entering the stadium.

“Our fans, I believe, have understood and reacted positively to this issue,” Poblete said. “This is a joint effort, not just from the fans or Blanco y Negro, but also from the public sector. We believe in public-private collaboration to allow families to return to the stadium.”

Authorities also announced a special reinforcement of public transportation, including both surface routes and the Metro system, to facilitate access to and from the stadium, particularly for post-match evacuation. Increased train frequency is planned to accommodate the expected influx of attendees.

Durán clarified that no request or authorization has been granted for a pre-match “arengazo” – a traditional rallying of supporters. “As a delegation, we only authorize such activities when requested by the organizer, in this case Blanco y Negro, and conducted within the stadium. There is no such request, and therefore no authorization for an ‘arengazo’,” he stated.

The March 7th match between Audax Italiano and Colo Colo, scheduled for 9:00 PM UTC at Estadio Bicentenario Municipal de La Florida, will precede the Superclásico. As of February 24, 2026, Audax Italiano holds the 10th position in the Liga de Primera standings, even as Colo Colo is ranked 6th, according to Sofascore.

El Mencho: US & Canada Issue Travel Alerts After Alleged Death

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor February 23, 2026
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

The governments of the United States and Canada activated travel alerts following the death of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho,” leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). The alerts, issued late Friday, advise citizens to avoid travel to several Mexican states, citing an increased risk of violence in the wake of the cartel leader’s reported demise.

Mexican security forces reportedly killed El Mencho during a military operation in the state of Jalisco on February 22, 2026, according to multiple sources. Whereas Mexican authorities have not officially confirmed the death, the U.S. And Canadian governments acted swiftly to warn their citizens. The U.S. State Department issued a “Level 4: Do Not Travel” advisory for six Mexican states: Colima, Guerrero, Jalisco, Michoacán, Sinaloa, and Zacatecas. Canada issued a similar warning, advising citizens to “avoid non-essential travel” to those regions.

The travel alerts specifically cite the potential for retaliatory violence from the CJNG following the reported death of its leader. El Mencho had become Mexico’s most wanted drug lord, and the CJNG has grown to be one of the most powerful and violent criminal organizations in the country. Experts suggest the cartel’s response could include attacks on security forces, rival cartels, and civilian targets.

According to reports, the operation to capture El Mencho involved a coordinated effort between the Mexican military and intelligence agencies. Details surrounding the operation remain scarce, but Axios reported that the U.S. Played a role in providing intelligence support. The extent of U.S. Involvement has not been publicly disclosed by either government.

The death of El Mencho, if confirmed, represents a significant blow to the CJNG. France 24 described El Mencho as Mexico’s most feared cartel kingpin, noting the cartel’s rapid expansion and its increasing sophistication in areas such as weapons procurement and money laundering. Although, analysts caution that the removal of a leader does not necessarily equate to the dismantling of a criminal organization. The CJNG has demonstrated a capacity to adapt and continue operating even after the arrest or death of key figures.

The escalating violence in Mexico has become a major concern for both the U.S. And Canada. The flow of fentanyl and other illicit drugs across the border continues to fuel the opioid crisis in North America. The U.S. Government has repeatedly pressured Mexico to do more to combat drug trafficking and dismantle the cartels. At least 73 people have died in violence connected to cartel activity in the aftermath of the attempt to capture El Mencho, according to AP News reports.

As of Monday, February 23, 2026, the Mexican government has not issued an official statement confirming El Mencho’s death. The U.S. State Department and Canadian government have not altered their travel advisories, and continue to urge citizens to exercise extreme caution when traveling in affected regions of Mexico.

Chile: Coordinate Cards Phased Out – What Users Need to Know

by Priya Shah – Business Editor February 23, 2026
written by Priya Shah – Business Editor

Chilean banks are phasing out decades-old security cards, known as “tarjetas de coordenadas,” in favor of more robust digital authentication methods, a transition that is raising concerns for elderly citizens and those with limited digital literacy. Even as the official deadline for eliminating the cards was pushed back to August 1, 2026, several institutions, including BancoEstado and Santander, have already begun disabling them for certain customers.

The move stems from a decision by the Comisión para el Mercado Financiero (CMF), Chile’s financial market commission, to implement stricter security standards for financial transactions. Initially, the CMF mandated the conclude of the cards by August 2025, but the timeline was extended following criticism that it did not allow sufficient time for adaptation, particularly among vulnerable populations. The CMF stated the change aimed to “facilitate the transition towards more robust authentication mechanisms” and mitigate fraud risks, especially for those heavily reliant on the physical cards.

BancoEstado began deactivating the cards for new users in November 2025, and expanded the phase-out to another group of customers on February 6, 2026. The bank is directing customers to activate BE Pass – a key-based system – or BE Face, which utilizes facial recognition, to authorize transactions. Santander followed suit, announcing on March 9, 2026, that the card method would no longer be available for its transactions. Banco de Chile, however, intends to adhere to the CMF’s final deadline of August 1, 2026.

The shift has sparked debate among citizens. Concerns center on the potential for excluding those unfamiliar with smartphones and online banking. “It’s a bit difficult for older adults to use apps for payments. The card was useful for doing it remotely,” one individual commented to BioBioChile last year, reflecting a sentiment echoed by others. A recent survey of Santiago residents revealed similar anxieties, with one person lamenting, “I had already cancelled [the card] the first time they said it would end… I have that problem, that I’m a ‘digital ignoramus.’”

The transition coincides with the mandatory implementation of Strong Customer Authentication (SCA), or “Autenticación Reforzada de Clientes” (RCA), beginning in August 2026. The RCA requires users to employ at least two independent authentication factors. These factors fall into three categories: something the user knows (like a PIN or password), something the user possesses (such as a token, mobile device, or payment card), and something the user is (biometric data like fingerprints or facial recognition).

Under the new regulations, RCA will be required for electronic fund transfers and modifications to transaction settings, including adding new recipients or setting up recurring payments. For example, when attempting to send 25,000 Chilean pesos to a family member, a bank application may now require not only a standard password but also a one-time code sent via SMS, a fingerprint scan, or facial recognition. The CMF’s changes also apply to new customer onboarding, password changes, and security device modifications.

Nutrition for Seniors: Diet, Hydration & Healthy Aging Tips

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor February 16, 2026
written by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor

Spain’s aging population is prompting increased focus on nutritional needs specific to seniors, as the country anticipates a significant rise in those aged 65 and over. According to data released by the Instituto Nacional de Estadística (INE) on June 24, 2024, the percentage of the population in this age bracket is projected to increase from the current 20.4% to 30.5% around 2055.

This demographic shift necessitates a tailored approach to diet, experts say, to support the autonomy, physical and mental health, and overall well-being of older adults. The human body undergoes changes with age, requiring specific attention to nutritional intake. These changes include a loss of muscle mass, decreased sensation of thirst, and reduced appetite, factors that, when combined with an active lifestyle, can contribute to healthier aging and disease prevention.

The INE projections indicate Spain will gain more than five million inhabitants in the next 15 years, and nearly six million by 2074, but this growth is heavily reliant on immigration. The proportion of the population born in Spain is expected to decrease from 81.9% today to 61.0% within 50 years. While the overall population is expected to rise to 54.6 million by 2074, the aging trend will continue to reshape the country’s demographic landscape.

Physiological changes associated with aging include alterations in body composition, with an increase in fat mass and a progressive loss of muscle and bone density. Digestive processes slow down, and the sense of thirst diminishes. Difficulty chewing, loss of appetite, and a decline in taste and smell are as well common. These alterations can lead to decreased interest in food or a preference for overly sugary or heavily seasoned meals, while reducing consumption of essential nutrients found in meat, fruits, and raw vegetables.

Social factors also play a role. Isolation and loneliness can lead older individuals to neglect their diets or skip meals. Alicia López de Ocáriz, director medical at Grupo Cinfa, emphasized that these circumstances are often not fully understood or addressed from a nutritional perspective by patients or their caregivers, potentially leading to nutrient deficiencies, dehydration, or malnutrition.

Maintaining muscle mass is a key nutritional goal for seniors. Experts recommend a daily protein intake of 70 to 90 grams, adjusted based on weight and health status. This intake should come from both animal sources – lean meats, fish, eggs – and plant-based sources like legumes, dairy, cereals, and nuts. Distributing protein intake throughout the day is crucial for preserving muscle strength and reducing the risk of falls.

Adequate hydration is also paramount. Water should be the primary source of hydration, avoiding sugary or alcoholic beverages. Proper hydration helps prevent constipation, a common issue as intestinal motility slows with age. A daily intake of 1.5 to two liters of water is generally recommended, adjusted for climate, health, and activity level. Caldos and infusions can also contribute to hydration, as can water-rich fruits and vegetables like melon, watermelon, oranges, and cucumbers.

Supporting intestinal health is another critical component of nutrition in older age. A daily fiber intake of 25 to 30 grams is recommended to improve transit. When possible, diets should include fruits with skin, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, and nuts. The intestinal flora tends to become imbalanced with age, and adequate hydration and fiber intake can act as preventative measures.

For patients with dysphagia, or difficulty swallowing, food textures must be modified. Solid foods should be pureed or mashed, and water can be thickened with special agents or gelatin. Foods with seeds or skins should be avoided. Preparing foods as creams, protein-rich purees, or enriched dairy products can facilitate intake. Thickening agents are designed to modify food texture, making it safer to swallow, and combining different textures in a single dish – such as soup with noodles – should be avoided to prevent choking.

The environment and frequency of meals also matter. Meals should be consumed in a distraction-free setting with proper posture, avoiding eating in bed. Caregivers should sit directly in front of the individual, offering food from below to prevent neck strain and potential aspiration. Five or six smaller meals throughout the day are recommended over fewer, larger meals to improve digestion and regulate blood sugar and fat levels.

Given the decline in taste and smell, enhancing the palatability of food is essential. Spices, herbs, vinegars, lemon, garlic, and onion can be used to season food, while avoiding excessive salt. Cooking methods like baking, poaching, steaming, grilling, and stewing are preferred over frying and the leverage of fatty sauces.
