Controversy at Sweden’s JVM Premiere: Elias Salomonsson’s Match Penalty and Possible Suspension

written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Sweden’s JVM premiere against Latvia barely had time to start before the Junior crowns went to a match penalty.

Skellefteå AIK defender Elias Salomonsson tackled Emils Veckaktins against the rim and was sent off for boarding. After the referees video reviewed the situation, the 19-year-old went to a match penalty.

– It happened so easily, a lot of nerves and you are overexcited. It is an unnecessary expulsion, says SVT’s expert Jonas Andersson in the broadcast.

The Swede may risk suspension

The Latvian lay on the ice for a long time and at first appeared to have injured himself.

After a couple of minutes he was able to get to his feet and then continued playing shortly thereafter.

– It’s a terrible start for Sweden and for Salomonsson, says Jonas Andersson.

The match then? Sweden won it 6–0.

After the final whistle, Salomonsson himself was of few words when he told about his feelings after the situation.

– You may have been a bit overzealous, but you just have to move on. No more of that. Everyone was tagged, it was an unfortunate situation.

Magnus Hävelid, the national team captain, filled in:

– I just focus on the next shift. I mentioned to the players before the game that we have a referee who has refereed the Olympics and a referee who has not refereed the Olympics – they will be tagged at the start. It was the same last year and that’s my experience here. We’ll just play for the next change and accept things. I’ve only seen it on the jumbotron so I’m not going to say much more about it but accept the verdict there and then.

The explanation behind the situation

What do you feel is happening?

– I go in to win the puck and happen to put the stick in his back, a bit unfortunate, says Salomonsson.

What goes through your head then and there?

– I don’t know, everything is possible. You can see that the club is in his back, but it went well with him. I didn’t think much then and there, he says and continues:

– You are happy that the others killed the box play.

Hävelid himself has spoken to his adept about what might happen now.

– When it does happen and the referee watches the extra on TV, you just have to accept it. It’s unfortunate for him, I think, and there’s a lot of emotion out there. But he knows that now the process has to take its course and then I hope that he is back as soon as possible, says Hävelid.

Elias Salomonsson’s concern: “Not my decision”

What do you know about possible suspension?

– I don’t know anything at the moment, says the national team captain.

When do you usually get notified about it?

– I think they are holding a hearing tomorrow if I understood our manager correctly.

However, Salomonsson himself is a little worried that he would be suspended.

– You always are when you get a match penalty, it’s not my decision so we’ll see what happens, says the defender.

Before the tournament, Canada’s super talent Macklin Celebrini received a match penalty for a similar move, but escaped suspension after review.

– I’ve seen it and it might be a bit similar. But I haven’t looked at this afterwards, says Salomonsson.

Niklas Wikegård appointed as new sports director of Djurgården Hockey

Niklas Wikegård appointed as new sports director of Djurgården Hockey

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com December 19, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Djurgården Hockey is rebuilding its organization for the future.

K–G Stoppel will not remain in the role of sports director and Djurgården has met with a number of candidates who will take over the role of sports director.

Among other things, they have met the scout Victor Nybladh and Oskarshamn’s outgoing sports director Thomas Fröberg.

But it is a completely different name that will take over, as the boss.

Hockeynews wrote during the morning that Niklas Wikegård is highly topical.

According to sources to Expressen, Wikegård was presented internally to the player group during the morning, before the club presented him as the new sporting manager.

Returning to the club again

– I have followed hockey through all the years that have passed since I was last an active coach and probably thought 1000 times about giving myself back in. Now both the time and the opportunity are absolutely right and it feels very fun to be able to do something together with all Djurgårders, says Niklas Wikegård.

TV4 expert Niklas Wikegård, with almost 20 years of experience in the television industry, is thus leaving that job. He has an agreement with TV4 until 2026.

Thus, he returns to the club for the third time. This after having coached the A team in 1995–1998 and 2002–2005.

– My task will be to use all the power that exists in and around Djurgår, channel it in the right way and find a way forward for the whole association. It feels incredibly exciting and something that is new to me. At the same time, I have a habit both as a hockey coach, from the years in the TV industry and from building companies. I believe that the accumulated experience will be of help to me, although of course I have the utmost respect for this new assignment.

Victor Nybladh, who is one of the people interviewed for the job, may also be part of a constellation. According to Expressen’s information, Djurgården wants Nybladh to work together with Wikegård, who will take office on May 1 according to the current plan.

Sweden Defeats Czech Republic 5-3 in Swiss Hockey Games Championship Match

Victories against Switzerland and Finland.

On Sunday afternoon, Tre Kronor faced the Czech Republic in the fight for first place in the tournament in Zurich, Switzerland.

The Swedes took the lead after 14.26 in the first period through Sebastian Hartmann.

The Czech equalizer came 12.59 into the second. On a goalkeeper return from Daniel Marmenlind, after a mispass by Christian Folin, Robert Kousal was able to put the puck in easily.

But it only took barely two minutes before Tre Kronor was back in the lead.

Pontus Andreasson scored his first national team goal after a beautiful attack.

With barely a minute left in the so-called intermediate act, Sweden had a brilliant chance to make it 3-1 on penalties. Marcus Sörensen, who was called, took the penalty himself. After deceiving the goalkeeper, the puck unfortunately ended up in the post.

The expert: “Must continue to persevere”

– Sweden must continue to endure, and deal with the Czech Republic’s pressure. They will release the handbrake each, Erik Granqvist’s analysis in Viaplay before the third period.

And one who had even more power in legs and club was Pontus Andreasson.

The goal, which meant 2–1, gave the Luleå player plenty of confidence.

With eleven minutes left, Malte Strömwall broke a Czech attack, the puck ended up with Andreasson, who was able to put in 3-1 between the legs of Dominik Pavlát.

Before this tournament, Leksand’s Lucas Elvenes had not played in the national team for many years – and had not scored a goal either.

When he thundered in 4-1 on a direct shot, Elvenes was able to write a complete hit in the previously empty column.

The Czech Republic refused to surrender. Petr Kodytek saw with 4–2 that the team was back in the match. The Swedish lead then shrunk further with Daniel Vozenilek’s 4–3 in game five against six.

The tournament victory was at hand when Marcus Sörensen made it 5-3 in an empty net with only seconds left.

The Swiss Hockey Games end on Sunday evening with the placement match between the home nation and Finland.

Today it became clear that Alexander Anderberg is leaving Oskarshamn for a game in Östersund.

IK Oskarshamn is thus a short back.

But that was quickly rectified. Anton Mylläri is now back in the SHL and actually also back in Oskarshamn, where he played Allsvenskan hockey 13 years ago. Mylläri is also reunited with Martin Filander, who had him in Västerås and Malmö.

Some time ago could The barometer reveal that the club was looking for Mylläri. According to Expressen’s sources, he is ready for the club, and it will be announced shortly.

Erik Johnson Emotional Return as Buffalo Sabers Face Colorado Avalanche

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com December 14, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

He has made close to 1,000 NHL games since 2007.

Between 2010 and 2023, Erik Johnson also represented the classic club Colorado Avalanche. There he was assistant team captain for several seasons and also won the Stanley Cup with the club in 2022.

But now he belongs to the Buffalo Sabers instead after his contract with the Avalanche expired this summer.

Tonight he faces his old club away from home for the first time since the move. Thus, it is the first time in almost 15 years that he stands in the Ball Arena as an opponent. This after around 700 NHL games as an “Avs” player.

Right before the match, he also met the media.

Then the 35-year-old became emotional, to say the least.

– Everyone knows what the organization means to me…, he began by saying.

“Especially for me and my family”

Then the tears began to flow, which he wiped away.

– It is…

Then the American back veteran needed to sit down to recover.

– Just give me a minute. Give me a second…, he said.

A while later, he was able to conduct the interviews and talked about his feelings about returning to meet his old teammates.

– It is special for me and my family. It will be fun to come back. It is a fantastic organization with nice people. I am happy to know that I was lucky enough to play there, he is quoted as saying Denver Post and continues:

– I’m just looking forward to being out there and playing for the amazing supporters who looked after me so well for so long. It should just be fun to come back. Denver is home to me. It’s one of the country’s finest cities, one of the best organizations… it was a great time, I’m so grateful.
