After a strong turnaround, Malmö could win the meeting with Modo on Saturday afternoon. The final score was 3-2 after a hat-trick by Carl Persson.

In the away team was the new acquisition Robin Alvarez, who got to celebrate his first Malmö victory in six years.

– I’m glad he’s here, Robin is really good today, tackles and works really well. Definitely a good reinforcement for us, praises Malmö coach Tomas Kollar.

Pure chaos along the E4

The road to the meeting with Modo was turbulent, to say the least, for Robin Alvarez.

The Malmö son did not travel with the rest of the team, which landed in Örnsköldsvik already on Friday evening, but came to the match only at 12.30 on Saturday.

Before that, he had been flown up to Umeå where he had to share a car with the TV4 gang who worked under Modo-Malmö.

– I got up at six this morning. Then I went to Umeå where I met Björn Oldéen and Frida Nordstrand, he says.

They got into a car to get to Örnsköldsvik – but the journey was greatly delayed.

Between Nordmaling and Örnsköldsvik there was a complete standstill in traffic.

– There were reindeer on the E4, so we had to brake and drive one car at a time around them because they just stood and licked, says Alvarez.

The car journey became even more dramatic when another driver drove into the TV4 car.

– I’m sitting in front on the passenger side and it just bangs in the side. Then it is someone who was sitting with the mobile phone or whatever he was doing and did not perceive them (the reindeer). So he has to go straight into the embankment, otherwise he would have driven straight into the back of us. There was a scratch mark on the car.

What happened then?

– Yes, so the reindeer remained, but we had to drive to the side for half an hour to write insurance and stuff (with the other driver). It was pure chaos for us there.

When Robin Alvarez and Malmö leave Örnsköldsvik, they do so as winners with all three points.

So in the end, Saturday was a successful day for Alvarez, who thus made his first game for the Redhawks in eight years. He has been recruited from the Finnish team Ilves, where he managed only two assists in 22 games.

– Hockey has been different. In Finland, it is very, very stagnant. They basically asked me to play more stationary. Then it is clear that I could have done better myself. The family has been home too. It has been tough. I’ve been questioning what I’m doing here. I really have done that.

How does it feel to be at home?

– The children were so very very happy. They are four and six years old, so I haven’t really known how they would take it. They’ve got a handle on the Redhawks. They were overjoyed. My wife Caroline was also very happy of course. It feels so good to be home, he concludes.

Timrå shocked Färjestad in the first period | SHL

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com January 23, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Anton Wedin gave Timrå IK the lead away to Färjestad.

Twelve minutes into the first period, the goal was 1-0 – and then the visitors continued to wash over the Färjestads defence.

Emil Pettersson extended Timrå’s lead just minutes after the first, forcing Tomas Mitell to take a timeout.

But it didn’t help much.

Instead, Jonathan Dahlén stepped forward and made it 3–0 for Timrå, before the period was over.

– We let way too much go and Timrå takes care of that, said Färjestad’s Per Åslund to TV4.

In the second period, Färjestad managed to shut down Timrå in terms of goals, but did not come any closer to an equaliser.

Instead of a goal forward, Färjestad’s Jeremy Groleau went to a five-minute expulsion and match penalty in the final stages of the period, after a head tackle on Timrå’s Anton Lander.

Färjestad thus had to start the third period with a numerical disadvantage, and even though they managed it without conceding a goal, they never got closer to the visitors.

Mitell’s criticism

In the end, Timrå was victorious with 3–0.

– The last five minutes of the first period and the whole second are good for long periods, but it’s not enough when you give away three goals before that, says Färjestad’s head coach Tomas Mitell to TV4 after the match.

He continues:

– The problem is not the own zone, but rather the way there. We all need to do a better job, myself included. We have to be ready when we get out.

Goalkeeper Jacob Johansson played great in Timrå, who otherwise had an up-and-down season.

– It’s my job. Just step up. It was fun to be able to help the team today. The most important thing is that we get three points. Things are starting to go a little better for us now, he notes.

Erik Granqvist: The Future of Viaplay Uncertain as Contract Nears End

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com January 5, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Erik Granqvist, 51, enjoys working with JVM.

What could be his last with Viaplay.

– My contract expires after the season, says the TV profile.

Erik Granqvist lights up when he starts to think that the Junior crowns will play the final at home.

– Wow! Fantastic! The 04-05 generation is an incredibly good generation, this means so much for the team, but also for Swedish ice hockey in general. This success is so long awaited. Swedish ice hockey has needed new idols for young girls and boys for a while now, that you can dream of becoming a new Jonathan Lekkerimäki. I think it is crucial for our sport, says Granqvist with emphasis in his voice.

Sweden has advanced via the group stage, quarter- and semi-finals to the final meeting of the tournament where the USA is the opposition. The matches, including the memorable semi-final against the Czech Republic, have been broadcast on Viaplay, which owns the JVM rights together with SVT.

In Viaplay’s studio, Erik Granqvist has camped together with pair horse Niklas Jihde and expert colleagues Valentina Lizana, Mattias Norström and Håkan Södergren.

– We have an enormous sense of team that we have built up over ten years. Everyone contributes with their top qualities. We are different people, but everyone gets to be part of the gang – just as it should be in a well-functioning team.

Something happens in Granqvist’s eyes when he gets to talk about Niklas Jihde.

– I love Niklas Jihde more than anything else in this world, except for my family of course. Jihde as an anchor in the studio is like having Noah Östlund, Mika Zibanejad or Sidney Crosby as a center. Superb game sense and perfect passes all the time.

Their relationship has grown strong since Granqvist’s entry on the channel in the 14/15 season. They worked with JVM back then and have since been followed during the World Cup, World Cup and most of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

The experience in Gothenburg is among the coolest Granqvist has experienced during his years as a TV expert.

– This fabulous atmosphere in Scandinavium and the success of the Junior crowns are at the top for me together with the World Cup gold in 2018 and the World Cup in 2016, where the young superstars led by McDavid, MacKinnon and Matthews gave us a taste of the hockey of the future.

Hopefully we survive

When Expressen meets Erik Granqvist in Scandinavium, he tells us that this will possibly be his last JVM with Viaplay. His four-year contract expires after the season.

– This JVM has been absolutely phenomenal and if this were my last year at Viaplay, it would be a magical ending. Imagine if it becomes gold at home. It doesn’t get any bigger than that.

For almost a decade, Granqvist has sat in the expert’s chair, but he has not actually let go of the coaching profession completely during these years. Behind the scenes, he has helped both Swedish and European goalkeepers.

– I have been a goalkeeper coach and mentor to several goalkeepers for many years, not many people know that. I have done that undercover, that I coached top goalkeepers in Europe. They simply want a second opinion, in which case I have contributed feedback. It is very stimulating and educational in every way.

If the career does not continue in front of the television cameras, the 51-year-old Bodenson is open to working as a goalkeeping coach again.

– It may happen that I go back and coach full time. I have to be grateful for every year I get to be in ice hockey. I have had the privilege of playing the world’s best ice hockey at Viaplay, both at junior and senior level, for so many years. This is my dream job, but I am well aware of how the industry works.

How worried are you about Viaplay’s future?

– I pray and hope that it will be resolved so that we can continue to cover the NHL, JVM and the men’s WC. These are tough times, everyone knows that, but Niklas and I have said it to each other: We will take one tournament and broadcast at a time. If this is our last championship, then we will give it our all. We want to make it as good as possible for the viewers.

Have you started talking to the Viaplay management about extending the contract?

– Now there has been a huge amount with everything else, what happened during the autumn. I myself have thought that I will give my all in every broadcast, so we will see in the spring what happens with me and Viaplay. Hopefully we survive.

Would you consider working for TV4 or SVT if that opportunity arose?

– I am humbly grateful if I get to work with hockey. Of course I want to continue working with Jihde and the gang. If I continue as a so-called expert in television, then I am grateful for that, otherwise I will work as a coach.

Since you live in Ängelholm, it’s easy to start thinking about Rögle, have you talked about anything?

– I spoke to Rögle several years ago when I was about to sign a new contract with Viaplay. Then we had a good dialogue. When I went from coaching to television after my years in Rögle and Färjestad, I wanted to prioritize my family and my son Jonathan, I wanted to have more time with them. I thank life every day for taking that step.

Friday evening, Sweden can win its third JVM gold in history. Since SVT broadcasts the final, Erik Granqvist will get to fully assume the role of supporter.

– It will be as awesome as it gets. I hope for the whole team, the coaches and the players, but also for Swedish ice hockey that it will be a gold medal now. It would be so incredibly important for everyone involved, concludes the TV profile.

Edmonton Oilers’ Connor McDavid Reaches 900 Point Milestone in 602 Games

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com January 3, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

He has only Nikita Kucherov, Tampa Bay (63 points) and Nathan MacKinnon, Colorado (58 points) ahead of him.

McDavid won the scoring league in the NHL last season with 153 points. His scoring average was then 1.86. If he keeps up the pace of the winter, he will finish with 131 points (1.60 on average per game).

He reached the 900 point milestone last night when he played Zach Hyman for the 2-0 goal.

It took McDavid 602 games to reach 900 points. Fifth fastest listing of all time.

– Hopefully I can do even more, it’s special. It’s a big milestone, but I just want to contribute even more to the Oilers now, said Connor McDavid on the ice after the victory.

Edmonton rises in the table

He’s not the only one of the Oilers’ stars to wake up in recent weeks.

Leon Draisaitl has also picked up the scoring production and was recorded last night for a goal and an assist.

And the super duo weren’t alone among Edmonton’s poster names in the scoring record, Zach Hyman accounted for a goal and two assists in the game of the night and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins recorded two goals and an assist.

With six straight wins, Edmonton is now just a few points out of the second and final wild card spot in the Western Conference.

With the Philadelphia Flyers, Samuel Ersson rested and the box was guarded by Carter Hart.

Hugo Hävelid Breaks New Record in JVM – Misreporting by SVT Corrected

Hugo Hävelid Breaks New Record in JVM – Misreporting by SVT Corrected

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com January 3, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

The junior crowns have impressed during the JVM. One of those who has perhaps performed the best so far is Hugo Hävelid. He was not in goal when Sweden lost on penalties against Finland on New Year’s Eve afternoon, but against Switzerland, Hävelid was back between the posts.

Then, in the quarter-finals, his tournament clean sheet was broken when Switzerland reduced it to 2-1.

Then the kept clean sheet stopped at 157 minutes. Shortly before, SVT trumpeted that Hävelid had set a new record in JVM.

– Hugo Hävelid has not only been really good in this tournament, he has actually been historically good. Now he has broken the record for kept zero in the JVM context.

The expert Jonas Andersson hung up on the broadcast.

– The old record from 2015, it was 135 minutes, now we have played more than 10 minutes of this third match then that Hävelid holds, that is, he is over 150 minutes. Mikhail Berdin from Russia held the old record, Hävelid breaks it.

Umicevic: “We made a mistake, what can I say”

But it was not a new JVM record, as both SVT proclaimed. Mikhail Berdin, who claimed to own the record, has never played in the JVM. The current record stands at 158 minutes, which American goalkeeper Spencer Knight managed to achieve in the 2021 JVM.

When Expressen caught up with SVT profiler Dusan Umicevic after the end of the match, which ended 3-2 to Sweden after extra time, he talks about why the alleged record was announced live.

– We made a mistake, what can I say? We looked at Hockeynews’ information, he says and at the same time confirms that they did not come out with a correction.

– But we removed it from our site. We did not make a correction in the broadcast, but it is incorrect information.
