The Super League is set to expand to 14 teams in 2026, following a majority vote by top-flight clubs. This decision, made at a meeting in Leeds, will see the end of “loop fixtures” while retaining the 13-home-match format.
Under the new system, 12 of the participating clubs will be persistent by IMG’s grading system. the remaining two spots will be filled by clubs selected by an independent panel. This means that clubs outside the current top 14 could be considered, potentially overlooking teams like Toulouse Olympique.
The expansion also raises the possibility of three clubs being promoted, with Salford potentially facing relegation despite the increase in teams. Bradford, London Broncos, adn Oldham are all reportedly interested in securing a place in the expanded Super League. However, Bradford’s potential return has drawn criticism due to the involvement of Nigel Wood, the new Rugby League Commercial chair, who previously chaired the club. Concerns have also been raised about the condition of Odsal Stadium, Bradford’s home ground.
Moreover, the decision to raise the overseas quota to ten foreign players from 2026 has sparked fears of a dilution of talent across the 14 teams. This has led to a mixed reaction from fans, with some expressing disappointment and others welcoming the change.
A Super League statement confirmed the expansion, emphasizing that the two additional clubs will be selected based on the club grading system and recommendations from an independent panel chaired by Lord Jonathan Caine. The panel will assess applications against set criteria, ensuring that only clubs of sufficient merit are chosen. The Super League clubs retain the ultimate authority to determine the number of teams in the competition.
