A 27-year-old British tourist has been extradited to Portugal and remanded in custody following the fatal stabbing of 19-year-old Daniel Galhanas in Lisbon. The suspect,whose name has not been released,was flown back to the Portuguese capital after failing to prevent his forced return.

The Incident

The stabbing occurred in the early hours of Oct. 14, 2023, in Bairro Alto, a popular nightlife district in Lisbon. Mr. Galhanas was reportedly stabbed in the neck with a broken bottle during a confrontation between rival groups.

Initial reports suggested that Mr. Galhanas’ friend had attempted to rob the tourist and his companions, who were allegedly part of a gang targeting foreigners. however, the Galhanas family vehemently denies these claims.

Family’s Account

The family insists that Daniel galhanas was not involved in any criminal activity and was merely trying to assist a friend in distress when the attack occurred. A relative provided a harrowing account of the events:

An Englishman throws a glass bottle at his friend, who breaks it. The same individual picks up the pieces of glass and hits Daniel, who stood in front of his friend to defend him.

The relative further stated, The group of Englishmen flee and are chased by Daniel’s friends. He was left behind to faint with a friend, as the video shows.

The Attack and Aftermath

Footage of the incident shows a man throwing a bottle at Mr. Galhanas’ friend before using the broken glass to stab Mr. Galhanas. He collapsed at the scene, succumbing to his injuries shortly after being transported to São José Hospital.

Video evidence from that night captured the chaotic scene near Largo do Calhariz,where a dozen individuals were engaged in a brawl as vehicles passed by.

Examination and Extradition

The Policia Judiciaria of Portugal confirmed the arrest and extradition, stating that they collaborated with UK police and judicial authorities to locate the suspect. The suspect is believed to have committed first-degree murder in Largo do Calhariz.

The victim ended up being hit in the neck with a broken glass bottle, wich caused serious injuries and led to his death on the spot.

The suspect reportedly fled to the United Kingdom the day after the murder. An international arrest warrant was issued, leading to his apprehension.

The suspect has appeared before judicial authorities in Portugal and is currently being held in pre-trial custody. He is expected to stand trial for the killing of Daniel Galhanas.

Community impact

The Galhanas family has consistently refuted claims that Daniel was associated with any gang, describing him as a local resident of Odivelas who was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

In a separate incident following the murder, a volunteer fire team who attempted to save Daniel had their vehicle attacked. Commander Débora Alves commented:

I don’t connect one thing to the other, but, shortly after the murder, a man was arrested for having stoned the window of one of our cars. The vehicle was inoperable after the attack.
