NRL Las Vegas: Team News, Late Mail & Key Updates for Knights, Cowboys & Bulldogs

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor February 28, 2026
written by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Kyle Flanagan may see playing time at hooker for the St George Illawarra Dragons in their clash with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs in Las Vegas this weekend, as the team navigates the absence of Jacob Liddle, according to reports.

The potential shift in Flanagan’s role comes as the Dragons confirmed Matthew Feagai will arrive off the bench for their match against the Bulldogs, following the cutting of two players from their initial squad. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs are set to welcome back wingers Jacob Kiraz and Marcelo Montoya, along with Matt Burton, after concerns over injuries.

Elsewhere in Las Vegas, the Newcastle Knights will face the North Queensland Cowboys. Knights coach Justin Holbrook has indicated his confidence in Dylan Brown’s ability to perform at halfback, despite it being a less frequent role for the player. Holbrook stated Brown’s versatility and comfort in organizing the side would be key, and anticipates a dynamic partnership with Fletcher Sharpe.

The Cowboys have confirmed star recruit Reed Mahoney is expected to play a full 80 minutes, with coach Todd Payten praising his leadership and impact on the team. Still, the Cowboys have dropped John Bateman and Harrison Edwards from their bench, with Matthew Lodge and Robert Derby taking their places. Griffin Neame has been cleared of a shoulder injury and is set to play.

The Bulldogs coach Cameron Ciraldo confirmed Kiraz, Montoya and Burton are all fit to play, stating they wouldn’t have been brought to Las Vegas if they weren’t ready. Sam Hughes will replace Leo Thompson in the front row.

The Dragons will see Valentine Holmes start on the right edge, switching from his usual position on the left. Lyhkan King-Togia is likely to come into the halves, potentially allowing Flanagan to shift to hooker if Damien Cook doesn’t play a full game.

The Knights and Cowboys will kick off at 1:15pm AEDT, followed by the Bulldogs and Dragons at 3:30pm AEDT. Further NRL matches are scheduled for later in the week, including Storm vs Eels on March 5th, and Warriors vs Roosters and Broncos vs Panthers on March 6th.

Tigers Rookie Makasini Could Play for USA, NRL Vegas News & Bulldogs Advantage

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor February 26, 2026
written by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

LAS VEGAS – Wests Tigers rookie Heamasi Makasini is drawing international attention, with the potential to represent the United States in rugby league, according to reports emerging from the NRL’s Las Vegas season opener. The 18-year-old winger, who made his NRL debut last season, is eligible for the US through his parents and is being targeted by the American national team as they build towards the 2030 World Cup, slated to be held in Las Vegas.

Makasini’s emergence has been rapid. He impressed during pre-season trials, scoring three tries against the Sydney Roosters and earning praise for a try against Penrith described as a potential “Try of the Year” contender. His potential arrival on the scene in Las Vegas next year could provide a significant marketing boost for the sport in the United States, particularly if the Wests Tigers are among the teams selected to play in the annual NRL fixture.

Former NRL prop Adam Woolnough, recently appointed head coach of the US national team, confirmed he is actively pursuing players eligible for the squad. “I’ve got a list of about a dozen players,” Woolnough told Fox Sports. “And so right now, I’m speaking with clubs, agents and players about that eligibility. And already, three or four players have confirmed they are keen to play.”

Woolnough, who has spent the last decade in sports administration, most recently as General Manager of Ice Hockey Australia, has a two-year contract with Team USA. He is aiming to build a competitive squad, currently ranked 22nd in the world, through a program of regular international matches. The US intends to play up to six internationals annually against Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and France in preparation for the 2030 World Cup.

Several players with NRL experience have previously represented the USA Hawks, including Ronaldo Mulitalo, Daniel Vidot, Joseph Paulo, Eddy Pettybourne, Junior Vaivai, Mark Offerdahl and Bureta Faraimo. Vidot arrived in Las Vegas on Saturday ahead of the US team’s match against Scotland at Coronado High School on Friday night.

The influx of NRL talent comes as the league continues its expansion into the American market. Canterbury Bulldogs backrower Viliame Kikau noted the advantage his team gained by arriving in Las Vegas two days before their rivals, the St George Illawarra Dragons, utilizing the Raiders’ facilities for acclimatization and training. Kikau also commented on the prevalence of gambling opportunities on the Las Vegas strip.

Meanwhile, Dragons player Kyle Flanagan reportedly faced a significant expense after losing a conditioning game during training, being required to pay for coffee for his teammates at a rate of approximately US$15 per cup. The Dragons were seen visiting Omnia nightclub to see DJ Steve Aoki perform over the weekend.

North Queensland Cowboys centre Jaxon Purdue, the youngest member of his squad, has been assigned the role of team speaker carrier. Purdue, making his first trip outside of Australia, is focused on bringing consistency to his game in 2026.

Newcastle players had an encounter with former UFC middleweight champion Sean Strickland while training at the UFC Performance Institute. The Bulldogs also crossed paths with UFC featherweight challenger Diego Lopes.

Jason Demetriou eyes PNG Chiefs job as NRL return looms

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor February 17, 2026
written by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Jason Demetriou, recently dismissed as head coach of the South Sydney Rabbitohs, has emerged as a leading candidate for the inaugural coaching position of the Papua New Guinea Chiefs, the NRL’s 19th team set to join the competition in 2028.

Demetriou, who also currently coaches the PNG Kumuls national team, expressed his strong interest in the role, telling Code Sports, “If there’s an opportunity to be involved with PNG, then I’d love that. I’m passionate about PNG and about the people of PNG and, more importantly, what rugby league can do for that country.”

Appointed Kumuls coach in 2024, Demetriou’s commitment to the nation extends beyond the international arena. He anticipates leading the team into the NRL, with the franchise slated to begin play in 2028. Despite currently holding the head coaching position at the London Broncos, a role secured following a call from Brisbane legend Darren Lockyer in November, Demetriou remains focused on the potential opportunity with the Chiefs.

Lockyer has indicated he would not impede Demetriou’s pursuit of the PNG position. “I coach the Kumuls, so they know where my interest is, as does the London club,” Demetriou stated. “I’m focusing on what I can control at the moment and that’s here with London, but when the right opportunity comes down the track, I will gaze at it.” Demetriou is under contract with the Broncos through 2026.

Demetriou believes the potential of Papua New Guinea’s rugby league talent is immense. “It’s scary how much potential there is in PNG,” he said. “It’s a huge job (for the head coach). If the NRL gets the development right, in five or six years time every NRL club will be going to PNG to find talent. They will be in the shop window.” He highlighted the current difficulty for PNG players to gain recognition within the NRL system, noting that a lack of exposure in Australian competitions hinders their recruitment.

Demetriou’s tenure at South Sydney began promisingly in 2022, inheriting the role from Wayne Bennett and guiding the team to a preliminary final. But, the 2023 season saw a decline in performance, culminating in the team missing the finals. He was subsequently sacked in early 2024 after a poor start to the season, losing six of their first seven matches.

Despite this setback, Demetriou feels the experience has made him a better coach. “That’s an aspiration — to get back into the NRL,” he said. “I’m not content with how I finished. I showed early on in my stint at Souths that I’ve got more to offer. It’s about finding the right club. I’m looking forward to doing what I need to do here at the Broncos and earning the right to get that shot again in the NRL. It’s not until you go through it where you take your real lessons. I’m without doubt a better coach for it.”

While Demetriou is considered a frontrunner, he faces competition from several other coaches. Adrian Lam, the PNG-born coach of the Leigh Leopards in Super League, and Brad Arthur, the current coach of the Leeds Rhinos, have also been linked to the position. Willie Peters, another Super League coach, and even former NRL mentors Wayne Bennett and Ivan Cleary have been mentioned as potential candidates. Cleary and Bennett’s contracts expire at the end of 2027, opening the possibility of a move to the Chiefs.

The PNG Chiefs have recently appointed Lorna McPherson as their inaugural CEO and Michael Chammas as their general manager, signaling a rapid progression in the establishment of the franchise. The selection of a head coach remains a critical step in the team’s development.

NRL 2026 Trials Week 3: Team Tips, Fifita, Mitchell & Moses Updates

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor February 16, 2026
written by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

South Sydney Rabbitohs fans are bracing for potential delays to the start of the NRL season for key players Latrell Mitchell and David Fifita, with both sidelined due to injury concerns. The news comes as teams finalize preparations for the upcoming pre-season trials.

According to reports, Mitchell and Fifita will both have a week off training as a precaution. The Rabbitohs were significantly impacted by injuries throughout the 2025 season, with several stars including Mitchell, Cody Walker, Cameron Murray, and Campbell Graham spending extended periods on the sidelines, and the club will be hoping to avoid a repeat of that misfortune.

Despite the injury concerns, there is optimism surrounding Fifita’s integration into the South Sydney squad. Newly signed from the Titans, Fifita will be looking to recapture his form under the guidance of experienced coach Wayne Bennett, as reported by the ABC on February 3, 2026. Bennett’s experience will be crucial in helping Fifita overcome a season lost to injury.

The Rabbitohs are still planning to unveil Fifita in their pre-season trial against the Manly Sea Eagles. Mitchell may also feature in the match, potentially in a novel position, though his availability remains uncertain.

Elsewhere in the league, the Parramatta Eels are set to showcase their new halves pairing of Mitchell Moses and Jonah Pezet against the Sydney Roosters. The Roosters are expected to field their new spine recruits in the same trial match.

The pre-season trials are heating up, with several matches scheduled for the coming weeks. The New Zealand Warriors will face the Gold Coast Dolphins on February 20th at Leichhardt Oval, while the Wests Tigers will host the Penrith Panthers. The Cronulla Sharks will play the Canberra Raiders at Polytec Stadium, Gosford, and the Roosters will face the Eels at the same venue. The Melbourne Storm will travel to the Sunshine Coast to take on the Gold Coast Titans on February 22nd.

The NRL season is set to initiate on March 2nd, with the Raiders taking on the Warriors. Fans can watch the 2026 NRL Pre-season series and All-Star matches live and ad-break free on FOX LEAGUE, available through Kayo Sports.
