Julia Roberts โand Sean Penn Champion “Manas“โ at โoscar-Season AMPAS Screening
LOS ANGELES -โ Acclaimed actors Julia Roberts and Sean Penn lent their support to the Brazilian โfilm Manas at a screening forโ Academy โmembers Saturday, signaling a potential โboost for the film’s bid to represent Brazilโ at the 2026 Oscars. The event highlighted the film’s powerful depiction ofโข systemic sexual abuse against girls in โขthe โAmazon, and the filmmakers’ commitment to bothโค artistic realism and the well-beingโค of their young star.
Manas, directed by Giovana marinelli,โ has already garnered important industry attention, โwinning the Best Director Award inโ Veniceโข Days in โ2024. The filmโค follows a young girl navigatingโข lifeโ on Marajรณ Island, a remote region of Brazil where โขcycles of abuse are prevalent. Director โฃJuliana brennand prioritized protecting 13-year-old lead actress Jamilli Correa during production, notably choosing not to allow her โคto โread the full script. “Myโฃ main concern was this 13-year-old โคgirl, protecting โher โpsychological well-being and make โขsure that while we were making this โfilm, whichโค is so violent, that [she] would not actually live through the violence,” Brennandโฃ explained.
The screening also served โคas โa platform to discuss the urgent need for resources in โremote communities like Marajรณ. Producer Rita Paes emphasized the importance of education regarding protection โand privacy for โyoung girls, stating, โ”We mustโ teach children โคabout protection and privacyโฆ But ther needs toโค beโข some senseโค of belonging [for these girls].”
The film’s Oscar prospects are further bolstered by the โคinvolvement ofโค prominent brazilian filmmakerโฃ Walter โคSalles, whose โ I’m still Here won the Best International Film Oscar last year,โ and the Belgian directing โduo Jean-Pierre Dardenne and Luc Dardenne. However, โ Manas may โface competition from the Dardennes’ ownโ 2025 Cannes title, Young Mothers, which is Belgium’s 2026 Academy Awards submission.
Manas was acquired by Brooklyn-based distributor KimStim, and enjoyed a prosperous 13-week run in โBrazil earlier thisโ year, playing in over โ70 theaters โnationwide. Brennand shared the heartening โnews that โฃthe film is now being screened in the veryโ communities on Marajรณ Island whereโ the depicted abuse occurs,at the request ofโค residents โeager to โengage with the film’s โmessage.
