Geneva Budget Deficit: Annuity Freeze & Municipal Costs

Geneva Faces Significant deficit in 2026 Draft Budget

Geneva, Switzerland‌ – September 18, 2025 – The state⁣ of Geneva is projecting a substantial deficit of 409.4 million francs in its 2026 draft budget, unveiled today by the Council of State. ‌The shortfall ⁣signals growing financial pressure on the canton⁢ and necessitates immediate cost-cutting measures.

The widening gap between rising expenditures-up 349.2 million francs-and revenue growth-increasing by 195.6 million francs-is driving the deficit, according too the government. This⁤ trend⁤ has been developing over several years⁣ but is now⁤ considerably worsening. The budget proposes freezing annuity increases ‌for civil servants ⁣and seeking financial contributions ⁣from municipalities toward intercantonal equalization costs, measures expected to reduce‌ the increase ⁢in⁢ charges by a ‌combined 177.7 million francs (60.2 million from annuity freezes and 108.6 million from municipal ⁢contributions).

“This‍ deficit is explained by a growth in total charges much faster than that of income,” a⁤ statement from the Council of State confirmed.

To address the ongoing financial strain, ‍the Council of State intends to introduce further ‌measures and has ⁣pledged to present a extensive savings plan ⁢next spring. The proposed budget⁤ and subsequent actions will impact public services and ‍municipal finances across Geneva,‌ requiring careful consideration and potential adjustments in the coming months.

Switzerland Army Budget Approved: Ammunition & F-5 Decisions

by Priya Shah – Business Editor September 17, 2025

Swiss Parliament Approves Army Budget, Rejects Additional⁤ Funding for⁣ Ammunition

BERN, September 17, 2025 – Switzerland’s Parliament today approved the 2025 army budget, but narrowly rejected ⁢a⁤ proposed additional billion-franc investment in ammunition, mirroring a similar decision made in June by the National Council. The⁢ Council of States voted‍ 30 to 13 against the supplementary credit.

The approved ‌budget ‌allocates engagement credits ⁢of 1.69 billion ⁣francs for 2025,‌ with 1.5 billion earmarked for armaments programs, ‍particularly new armored vehicles, as part of a⁤ parliamentary ‍goal to dedicate 1% of GDP to the army⁣ by 2032.

A proposal⁢ to increase funding⁢ for tank refurbishment and a new wheeled artillery system also failed, with both amendments defeated by meaningful margins⁢ – 35 votes to 7 and 36 votes to 7, respectively.

The debate centered on financial priorities and⁢ ensuring adequate ⁣supplies for⁤ existing‍ and future ⁣defense systems. Supporters ⁤of the additional ammunition funding, like Andrea Gmür-Schönenberger (center/Lu), argued Switzerland must secure contracts ‌and delivery slots,⁢ stating, “There is no point in having modern weapons if they can only be used⁣ over ‌a short time due to ‍a lack of ammunition.”

Opponents, including Pascal Broulis (PLR/VD) and Josef Dittli (PLR/UR), emphasized the need to prioritize spending⁢ given federal financial constraints and the‍ upcoming costs associated with the F-35 programme. Dittli stated, ‍”Switzerland needs more ammunition, but adding a billion here is not ‍the ⁣way to follow.”

Parliament ‌also narrowly validated ⁢the continued, though limited, operation of the F-5 Tiger fleet until suitable replacements are available, voting 22 to ⁤20 in favor. Hannes Germann (UDC/SH) championed extending the lifespan of the F-5s,arguing ‌the cost of a single F-35 exceeds the expense of maintaining the⁣ existing fleet. ⁤Defense Minister Martin Pfister countered that extending the F-5s’ lifespan would be ‌too expensive and would not contribute to Switzerland’s ⁣defense capabilities.

Switzerland’s Security Risks Rise Amid Drone Intrusion in Poland

Russian Drone intrusion in Poland Poses No Immediate Impact to Switzerland, Defense Minister Says

September 14, 2025 – The recent incursion of Russian drones into Polish airspace has, thus far, had “no concrete consequences” for Switzerland, according to Minister of Defense Martin pfister. Though, he emphasized the event underscores the “fragile situation in Europe,” in comments published Sunday by the Sonntagszeitung.

Pfister characterized the airspace violation as a “violation of the territorial integrity of a European State,” noting the serious response from European nations and the escalating risk of further escalation.

While a similar scenario in Switzerland is considered unlikely due to its geographic location, Pfister acknowledged the country’s current air defense capabilities are insufficient to counter such drones. Switzerland possesses systems capable of downing short-range drones, but awaits delivery of medium and long-range systems, specifically the Patriot system, which is experiencing delays. The U.S. Department of Defense is prioritizing deliveries to Ukraine, pushing Switzerland further down the production queue.

Pfister highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen security through increased cooperation with neighboring countries, advocating for early drone detection and collaborative defense strategies, while maintaining Switzerland’s autonomous decision-making authority regarding the deployment of its resources.

The Confederation Intelligence Service has warned of a worsening security threat to Switzerland, with Pfister stating there is a risk the country’s security could be “much more threatened than we imagine today” within the next five years.

The incident in Poland, where Polish and NATO forces downed Russian drones during an attack on Ukraine, follows a similar airspace violation reported by Romania. Switzerland is not a member of NATO.

Conservative Activist Charlie ‍Kirk Killed in Shooting

September 11, 2025 -⁣ 14:53 (Published) -⁤ Charlie Kirk, a prominent conservative activist and founder of turning Point USA, was shot and killed today⁤ while ⁣speaking at a rally held ⁤at a university⁣ campus. The incident occured in front of an estimated 3,000 people.

Kirk, 31, was struck‌ in the neck by‌ a⁢ shot fired from ⁣a rooftop more than 100 meters⁣ away, according too American ‍authorities. The shooter’s motivations are currently unkown.⁤ Videos of the shooting quickly circulated on social media.

President Donald Trump responded to the news, attributing blame to “the radical left.” ⁣In a video posted to his Truth⁢ Social network, he stated, “For years, the radical left has compared formidable Americans like Charlie ‌to the nazis and the worst criminals… This kind of rhetoric is directly responsible ‌for the terrorism we know today.” He pledged⁤ to identify and prosecute all those involved in the “atrocity” and any other political violence, including those who fund and support it.

Vice ⁣President JD Vance ⁢is⁢ scheduled to ⁢travel to Utah on ‌Thursday to meet with Kirk’s family. He‌ previously described Kirk as “a real friend.”

Utah Governor Spencer ⁢Cox labeled the killing a “political assassination” and noted that the death penalty remains in force ‍in the state. Several figures within the conservative movement have referred to ⁤Kirk as a ‍”martyr” for conservative and Christian values. ‌

The FBI, led by Kash Patel, ‌is continuing the examination. Two individuals were briefly detained ‌but have since been released.

The shooting has sparked widespread⁣ condemnation across the political spectrum. Unsuccessful 2024 ‌presidential candidate Kamala Harris stated⁣ that “political violence has no room in america.” Former President Joe Biden and other prominent Democrats, including Barack Obama, bernie Sanders, and California governor Gavin Newsom, also called for an immediate ⁤end‍ to such violence.

Kirk, originally from the Chicago suburbs, was a vocal advocate for ⁣gun rights and a ⁤father of two. He founded Turning Point USA in 2012 at the age of 18, growing it into the⁤ largest ‌youth conservative association in the United States. The organization has 6.9 million Instagram followers and 3.8 million YouTube subscribers. Turning Point⁣ USA played a notable role in mobilizing young voters for Donald Trump’s presidential campaigns, including⁢ sending activists to‌ Washington D.C. for the January 6, ⁢2021 demonstration that led to ⁣the Capitol riot.

following the ⁢news of Kirk’s‌ death, some students at the samuel Kimball campus expressed fear‌ for their safety. One 18-year-old computer engineering student, who did not ⁣attend the event but identified with Kirk’s values, ⁤stated, “It gives⁣ me‍ the impression that I should be very careful when ‌I express my political opinions… If I was someone who was thinking of doing politics, I would be afraid of being shot.”

President Trump has ‍ordered that American flags‍ be flown at half-mast in tribute to Kirk.(Keystone-ATS) – Source Tag retained as per original text.

Inditex Earnings: Sales Rise Despite Lower First-Half Profits

Inditex shares Surge Despite Modest‍ First-Half Results, Fueled ⁢by Strong Q3 Start

Madrid, Spain ⁤- September 10, ⁢2025 – Shares in inditex, the Spanish fashion‍ giant and parent company of Zara, jumped 7.1% to⁤ €45.68 on the ⁣madrid Stock Exchange Wednesday, despite reporting first-half results that slightly missed analyst expectations. The positive market ‌reaction stems from a reported 9% increase ⁢in sales between August ‌1st and September 8th, ‍signaling a strong start to the third quarter.

Inditex ‍reported a net profit of €2.79 billion⁤ (2.61 billion Swiss francs) for‌ the first half of 2025, a 0.8% increase ⁣year-over-year. Turnover reached €18.36 billion, up 1.62%. While these ⁣figures represent continued profitability, ⁣they fell slightly short ⁤of the ⁤€18.53 billion turnover and €2.82 billion profit anticipated by analysts surveyed by FOTSET.

“we again achieved a solid performance during this first half of 2025, with satisfactory sales in a ⁣complex market environment and by maintaining high profitability levels,” stated Inditex General Director Óscar García Maceiras in⁢ a press release.

The slower growth follows a trend observed in the‌ first quarter‌ of the⁢ 2025 fiscal year, marking the lowest ‌sales increase (1.5%) since 2018, excluding pandemic-affected years.Profit growth of 0.8% was also the lowest in a decade,‍ again excluding ‌2020 and 2021.

However, the strong performance of fall/winter collections and ⁣the recent sales surge have instilled‌ confidence. “The fall/winter collections were very well received by our customers,” Inditex⁢ reported.

Analysts at XTB⁢ España noted the market’s positive response, stating,⁤ “In general, we believe that the results were bad, but the⁤ market reacts very positively to this growth‍ figure, as it implies a return ⁣to the growth rates to which ‍Inditex had accustomed us.”

All of Inditex’s brands – Zara, Pull & Bear, Bershka, ⁤Stradivarius, and ⁣Oysho – experienced sales growth in⁢ the first half, with ⁣the exception of Massimo Dutti.

inditex plans ‌to invest approximately €1.8 billion during the 2025 financial year, with a focus on logistical expansion. The company’s two-year investment program allocates €900 million annually to increase logistics capacity⁤ in both ‌2024 and 2025. inditex ⁢also emphasized its commitment to store optimization ⁢and sustainability as key‌ drivers of long-term growth.

Title: French Public Demands Macron’s Resignation Amidst Political Crisis

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor September 5, 2025
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

Macron Faces Calls for Resignation as French dissatisfaction Soars

PARIS – Nearly two-thirds of French citizens (64%) now favor the resignation of President emmanuel Macron adn a snap presidential election, according to a new Odoxa-Backbon survey conducted for Le Figaro. The mounting discontent comes as Prime Minister François Bayrou faces a likely no-confidence vote and reflects a dramatic erosion of trust in Macron’s leadership amid ongoing economic challenges.

The widespread desire for change signals a deepening political crisis for Macron, who has already appointed four Prime Ministers in under two years. A majority (56%) of those surveyed also support a dissolution of the National Assembly and early legislative elections, seeking a broader reset of the country’s political direction. This surge in opposition underscores the growing frustration with the current government’s handling of the nation’s affairs and raises questions about its ability to govern effectively.

Separate polling by Verian for Le Figaro Magazine reveals a precipitous decline in Macron’s approval rating, now standing at just 15% – a six-point drop since July 2025. Even among voters who supported him in the first round of the 2022 presidential election, only 45% remain favorable, marking the lowest level as his initial election in 2017, according to an Elabe poll for Les Échos.Bayrou’s position is notably precarious ahead of a National Assembly vote on Monday, where opposition parties have signaled they will reject his request for urgent measures to address the national debt. Confidence in Bayrou himself is at a record low, with only 14% of french citizens expressing trust in his leadership, according to the Verian survey – the lowest ever recorded for a Prime Minister in this barometer.
