Global Chainsaw Sculpting Masters Converge in Burrville for US Open Championship
BURRVILLE, New York – The North country is currently hosting some of the world’s most accomplished wood carvers, who are transforming logs into art using chainsaws.
The US Open Chainsaw Sculpture Championship has drawn elite carvers from Wales,Ireland,Australia,and Japan to Burrville Power Equipment. Participants are showcasing their skills with chainsaws as their primary artistic tool.
“It’s a little challenging at frist, but you learn to do good art with it,” said Alonzo Montoya, a support carver.
Scott Simmons, owner of Burrville Power Equipment, highlighted the importance of the event: “So with the carver end of it, this is the first time that all of this talent has been together in one place.” Many of the competing sculptors are recognized as master carvers, having achieved victories in international chainsaw competitions.
This year’s competition centers on the theme of finding beauty in a troubled world.
Takao Hayashi, a master sculptor from Japan, shared his vision: “Japanese samurai have a strong heart. I will carve a samurai, but not human. Samurai Cat.”
John Hayes, who traveled from Ireland, explained his passion for the medium: “The creativity. The physicality. The danger. It’s kind of a combination of it all, really. It’s not just the art form. It’s the battle you have with the log and then what you find within the log.”
The championship continues daily through Saturday.While some sculptures will be available for auction,those created by the master sculptors are slated to remain within the local community.
