Family Flees Kyiv: A New Beginning in Lucerne, Switzerland

by Emma Walker – News Editor February 23, 2026
written by Emma Walker – News Editor

A Ukrainian family, the Konovalovs, have rebuilt their lives in Neuenkirch, Switzerland, after fleeing Kyiv in the wake of the full-scale Russian invasion in February 2022. Zhanna and Vadym Konovalov, along with their daughter Anastasiia and Vadym’s mother, Nadiia Profetska, now reside in the canton of Lucerne, having navigated a phased relocation that began with mother and daughter in the spring of 2022, followed by the father and grandmother a year later. Even the family’s cat, Romeo, made the journey to Switzerland.

The initial days of the war caught the Konovalovs by surprise. According to a report in bote.ch, February 24, 2022, began as a normal day in Kyiv before the first explosions signaled the start of the conflict. Zhanna and Anastasiia were the first to leave, seeking refuge in Switzerland two months after the invasion. Vadym and Nadiia followed in 2023.

Vadym Konovalov’s professional background includes entrepreneurial experience and innovation management, having earned a degree from the University of California, Berkeley, and an Executive MBA from the International Management Institute MIM in Kyiv, alongside a Master’s in Business Economics, as detailed on his LinkedIn profile. He is currently associated with Tiw, a newly established technology company in Switzerland, where he held a leadership position as of December 2016.

The family’s story unfolds against a backdrop of ongoing conflict in Ukraine and concerns about the influence of nationalist groups within the country. Andrej Konovalov, in an interview published by zgif.ch in September 2025, described how nationalist influence in Ukraine operates outside of formal political channels, relying instead on threats of physical violence. He cited the 2015 incident near the Ukrainian Parliament in Kyiv, where a demonstrator threw a hand grenade, injuring over 140 people and killing three National Guardsmen, as an example of this dynamic. The case of Serhyj Sternenko, a Ukrainian nationalist who was acquitted after being accused of murder, further illustrates the challenges faced by the Ukrainian state in addressing extremist violence, according to Konovalov.

Alexander Konovalov, listed on LinkedIn as the founder of Vidby, a company focused on overcoming language barriers in business, is also a member of the Forbes Technology Council. His work suggests a focus on technological solutions to global challenges, a contrast to the political and security concerns facing his family’s homeland.

Berlin Cancels Planned Functional Swimming Pool After 10 Years

by Emma Walker – News Editor February 17, 2026
written by Emma Walker – News Editor

Berlin’s planned “simple functional swimming pool” has been cancelled by the state government after more than a decade of planning, according to a report finalized in April 2025.

The project, intended to address capacity issues at Berlin’s public swimming facilities, was the subject of a report to the Senate, presented by Senator for Interior and Sport, Iris Spranger, and subsequently forwarded to the Berlin House of Representatives for review. The report details the “status of implementation of the pool agreement between the State of Berlin and the Berliner Bäder-Betriebe (BBB).”

The BBB, established in 1996 as a public law institution, is Europe’s largest municipal swimming pool operator, managing 67 facilities across 62 locations. These include 38 indoor swimming pools, five combination pools (indoor and outdoor), seven non-public swimming facilities for school and club utilize, and 29 outdoor pools, nine of which are leased to private operators. The BBB also operates 22 saunas, three of which are leased.

In 2023, the BBB facilities recorded a total of 5.7 million visitors, with 3.6 million using public facilities and 2.1 million using non-public facilities. The company reported a turnover of €129.8 million in 2023, with a state subsidy of €110.9 million.

The cancellation of the new pool project follows a history of financial constraints impacting the BBB. Since the transfer of responsibility for Berlin’s pools from the districts to the BBB in 1996, state funding has steadily decreased. Funding was reduced from approximately €79 million in 1995 to €55.8 million in 2000, and further to €37.3 million in 2006. This led to the closure of eleven pools in 2001 and 2002, and subsequent increases in entry prices and reductions in concessions. Sauna and course prices were increased again in 2024.

The finalized report on the pool agreement establishes a standardized and regular reporting system, consolidating and expanding upon previous reports from the BBB. The Senatsverwaltung für Inneres und Sport (Senate Department for Interior and Sport) and the Senatsverwaltung für Finanzen (Senate Department for Finance) collaborated on the development of this new reporting framework.

As of February 17, 2026, the BBB offers a monthly ticket for €38 (or €30 reduced) providing unlimited access to all of its indoor swimming pools.
