Scarlett Johansson has taken legal action against a company that used images and audio from the actress in its AI app Lisaai. The 22-second spot, distributed on X, begins with an earlier clip of Johansson behind the scenes of Marvel’s “Black Widow.” There she says: “What’s going on, guys? This is Scarlett and I want you to come with me now.” The image then changes to an AI-generated version of the actress and a fake voice advertises the app in her guise.

According to Variety, Johansson has already hired lawyer Kevin Yorn. The ad, discovered on October 28, appears to have since been deleted. “We do not take these matters lightly. As usual, we will pursue all legal remedies available to us in these circumstances,” Yorn told Variety. According to the magazine, the app manufacturers have not yet commented on this.
AI fakes are problematic
There are always legal disputes due to AI-generated content. Just a few weeks ago, Tom Hanks also had it warned on Instagramthat an AI-generated advertisement of his for dental care was circulating. He made it clear on Instagram that he had nothing to do with that.
But the theft of images and voices for AI-generated content is not a new phenomenon. The Canadian voice actress Bev Standing had already filed a lawsuit against the company behind Tiktok, Bytedance, in May 2021. Her voice had been used for Tiktok’s text-to-speech feature without her permission.
