Streaming Services to Face โAustralian Content Obligations
CANBERRAโฃ – The federal โgovernment is reintroducing โlegislation requiring streaming services operating in Australia to invest in โขlocal content production,a moveโค welcomed by โthe screen industry.โ Arts Minister Tony Burkeโข announced the return of the proposed quotas on Tuesday,โข following a period of delay linked to concerns over free-trade agreements.
The โmove fulfills a key commitmentโ made in the Albanese government’s โ2023 Revive national cultural policy. It builds on โขa 2021 proposal โfrom the Coalition government for a voluntary โค5 per cent quota, andโ surpasses the Greens’ โlong-held advocacy for a 20 per cent โlevy.
The โฃquotas, โฃinitiallyโข expected in July 2024, were paused while the โgovernment โขassessed potential conflicts โwith international trade agreements.Burke explained in April, during an โappearance on ABC Radio National’s Arts in 30, โขthat these concerns โคprompted the delay.
“We โshould never underestimateโ how vital it is for Australians to see themselves on screen,” Burke stated. “It helpsโ us to โคbetterโค understand ourselves, our neighboursโค better โand allows the world to seeโข us.” He added, “Since their introduction in โaustralia, streamingโข servicesโ have created someโฃ remarkable shows. This obligation will ensure that those โstories – ourโข storiesโ -โ continue to be made.”
