Angelina โฃJolie Criticizes U.S. While Promoting Newโ Film, Highlights Importance of Open Dialogโค on Sexuality and Loss
NEWโค YORK – Actress Angelina Jolie sparked โdiscussion Saturday โขwhile promoting her new film, “Couture,” expressing a โคsentiment that she doesn’t “recognize” the โUnited States and praising the freedom of expression she experiences internationally. The remarks came during a post-screening Q&A โsession, where jolie also discussed her personal experiences with preventative โฃcancer treatment, the โfilm’s explorationโ of desire in โคtheโ context of illness, and a deeplyโ personal tribute to โฃher lateโค mother, Marcheline Bertrand.
Jolie revealed she underwent a double mastectomy about a decade ago โafter losing her motherโ andโ grandmother at a young โคage, stating,”Those were my choices. โขIโ don’t say everybody should do it that way, โขbut it’s important โto have the choice.I don’tโ regret it.” โคShe emphasized the vulnerability felt by those facing cancer, notably women, notingโข the โขdisease’s impact on self-perception.
The film,Jolieโค explained, also โคdeliversโฃ a message “to anybody who โขis with โขa woman they love,” advocating for open communication about desire and sexuality โeven after a diagnosis. “When I read โคthat [Maxine] was diagnosed, I โhad an idea where it was gonna go, [but] I certainly didn’t think it was gonna end the way it ends. I โฃdidn’t โฃthink desire would still be aโค partโ of the film. It’s critically important to live and beโข desirable as a woman, and for those who love a โwoman to โknow that.”
Co-star Louis Garrel (“Little Women”) โechoed Jolie’s sentiments, criticizing the ofen “pathetic tone” used in films depicting cancer,โ particularly breast cancer. “It is alsoโข connected โคto desire,” Garrel stated. “We are stranger than that as human beings. Even if somebody lost their breast, it can be more exciting erotically. You have to understand that men can be โeroticizedโ in multiple ways.” He urged audiences toโ reject societal constraints, adding,โค “Don’t beโข afraid ofโ anything. The minds of โmenโ are more original than what the magazines โsay.”
The event took a poignant turn โขwhen an audience member thanked Jolie for her advocacy for Palestine โand “peopel whoโฃ are voiceless.” The same audience โmember inquired about the necklace Jolie wore in โ”Couture,” which belonged to her mother, Marcheline Bertrand.โค
Visiblyโ emotional, Jolie shared she woreโฃ both the necklace and her โฃmother’s ashes duringโ filming. “I thoughtโข aboutโ her a lot,” โขshe said. “Iโข think everybody in this room has sat in a hospital roomโฆ I wish [my mother] had this community. Iโ wish sheโ were โable to speak asโค openlyโ as I’ve been and that people would respond as graciously as you have.” She concluded by saying Bertrand “would have told Maxine to live every day and focus on life.”
