San Juan Mayor Calls Emergency Security Summit Amid Rising Violence
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Sanโ Juan Mayorโ Romero Lugo convened anโ emergency โmeeting today with a coalition of local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies โto โaddress a recent escalation in violence and bolster public safety across the city. the conclave,held in Rรญo piedras’ market Square,focused on optimizing โขresource allocation and increasing the presence of security forces in high-crime areas.
The meeting brought together leaders from the San โคJuan Municipal Police,โค the Carolina Municipal Police, the Puerto Rico Police, the Federal โคBureau โofโค examination (FBI), Immigration andโฃ Customs โEnforcement – Homeland โSecurity Investigations (HSI), the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA),โค and the United States Marshals Service. This โcollaborative effort signals a unified front against rising crime rates and a commitment to coordinated โขaction.
“The plan that we have outlined together with theโ agencies seeks toโ address the most critical points of crime incidence with strategic surveillance, preventive presenceโข and direct collaboration in joint operations. Our goal is clear; greater patrolling, rapid responseโ and safer โขcommunities,” stated San Juan Municipal Police Commissioner Juan Jackson Rodriguez.
The San Juan Municipal Police will instantly activate additional units inโ areas identified as crime hotspots, supplementing the work of state and federal partners. Mayor Lugo โขemphasized the importance of shared obligation in maintainingโค public safety.
“Public safetyโ is a shared responsibility.โฃ In San juan we will continue to strengthen collaboration with all agencies to continue providing a safer,more orderly โcity with better opportunities forโข everyone,” Lugo added.
The meeting follows recent violent incidents, including a mass shooting in Carolina, Puerto Rico, were three victims have been identified. While the Carolina massacreโฃ is a separate incident, it underscores โthe broader concerns about escalating violence prompting the emergency security measures in โSan Juan.
