Austrian Ensemble for New Music marks Half-Centuryโค ofโ Premieres, Expansion Planned
SALZBURG, Austria – The Austrian ensembleโ for new Musicโข (OENM) is celebrating itsโ 50th anniversary โขthisโฃ year, having premiered approximately 400 contemporary โฃmusical pieces since its founding in 1975. The โensemble, born from a perceived lack of focus on new music in Salzburg, is now โคpoised for expansion beyond its conventional base, bringing cutting-edge compositions to audiences across Austria.Founded by โฃcomposer and conductor Klaus Ager, then a future rectorโ of the University ofโ Mozarteum, and clarinetist Ferenc Tornai,โข the OENM arose from a โdesire to champion contemporary โฃmusic. ager, reflectingโข on the musicalโค landscape at the time,โค described theโ situation as โ”desolate,” prompting himโ to gather a small group of musicians โfor their inauguralโฃ concert on Juneโฃ 14,โ 1975, at the ORF audienceโ studio in Salzburg.โฃ The 50th-anniversary celebrations began โขwithโฃ a studio โคconcert mirroring the originalโ event, with a larger festival concert scheduled for October.
The ensemble has consistently prioritized commissioning new works, notably from emergingโ composers, and currently comprises โ20 musicians. Johannesโข Kalitzke has served as the firstโ guest conductor for nearly three decades, since 1997. Looking ahead, Isabel Birgit Biederleitner assumed the artistic management role at the beginning of โฃ2025, while โคMartinโ rummel, rector of the Anton Bruckner Private University Linz, chairs the association board.
