SAG-AFTRA Declares AI-Generated Performer Tilly Norwood Not a Human Actor, Demands Regulation
LOS ANGELES, CA – The Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) has issued a firm statement declaring Tilly Norwood, a digitally created performer by AI production studio Particle6, is not an actor and advocating for clear guidelines surrounding the use of synthetic performers in the entertainment industry. The union’s stance comes amid growing controversy and vocal opposition from Hollywood stars regarding the increasing sophistication and potential impact of AI on human performers.
The debate surrounding Norwood highlights a critical juncture for the industry, as advancements in artificial intelligence raise questions about the future of acting, intellectual property, and the very definition of performance. The core concern centers on the potential displacement of human actors and the erosion of their livelihoods, and also the ethical implications of replicating human likeness and artistry without consent or fair compensation.SAG-AFTRA is pushing for comprehensive regulations to ensure transparency and protect its members whenever a synthetic performer is utilized.
Particle6 creator Eline Van der Velden defended Norwood, stating she “is not a replacement for a human being, but a creative work - a piece of art,” and likened AI to “a new tool, a new paintbrush” akin to animation or CGI. Van der Velden, herself an actor, asserted that AI cannot diminish “the craft or joy of human performance.”
Though, numerous actors have publicly condemned the creation. Melissa Barrera, Kiersey Clemons, Mara Wilson, and Whoopi Goldberg have all voiced concerns. Goldberg, on “The View,” emphasized the distinct qualities of human performance, stating, “You can always tell them [AI performers] from us. We move differently, our faces move differently, our bodies move differently.”
Emily Blunt expressed shock and ”fear” upon seeing an image of Norwood during a Variety podcast interview, stating, “Good Lord, we’re screwed. That is really, really scary…Please stop taking away our human connection.”
SAG-AFTRA’s full statement, shared via social media, underscores the union’s commitment to safeguarding the rights and opportunities of its members in the face of rapidly evolving technology. The union is actively seeking industry-wide agreements to address the use of AI and ensure fair practices for all performers.
