Gary Sheffield Jr.Criticizes Yankees GM Brian Cashman Over Ryan McMahon Trade
NEW YORK – Gary Sheffield Jr., son of former yankees star Gary Sheffield, publicly criticized Yankees general Manager Brian Cashman following the team’s acquisition of Ryan McMahon from the Colorado Rockies in July. Sheffield Jr.’s criticism, voiced on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, centers on the potential impact of the trade on the Yankees’ ability to pursue Boston Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman this offseason.
the Yankees acquired McMahon, an All-Star in 2024, on July 26th in exchange for minor-league pitchers Griffin herring and Josh Grosz. The move addressed a need at third base, where the Yankees had utilized seven different players in the position by late July. Since joining the Yankees, McMahon has a .243/.341/.393 slash line with three home runs and 15 RBIs in 35 games.
Sheffield Jr.’s post was a response to a report from ESPN’s Jeff Passan indicating Bregman is likely to opt out of his current contract and become a free agent.”Thank god the Yankees didn’t agree to spend three years $48 million on a defensive specialist at third base,” Sheffield Jr.wrote. “Woudl be terrible if they had taken themselves out of the Bregman sweepstakes with a near-sided move at the deadline!”
Bregman, a two-time World Series champion and three-time All-Star, is expected to command a contract of five-plus years worth $35 million or more per year. The Yankees’ acquisition of McMahon may limit their financial adaptability in pursuing Bregman.
