Richelieu on Ukraine: Realpolitik, Russia, and Trump’s America

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor February 28, 2026
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

Geneva – Peace talks mediated by the United States commenced in Geneva today, raising the possibility of a direct meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin, with former U.S. President Donald Trump also expected to participate. The negotiations come as the conflict enters its fifth year, marked by a grinding war of attrition and escalating casualties.

Recent Russian advances have been incremental, with the capture of Pokrovsk, a key logistical hub, achieved only after a two-year campaign. According to assessments, combined military losses for both sides are approaching two million casualties, mirroring the scale of devastation seen during the Thirty Years’ War, albeit with modern weaponry. Despite these gains, Russia continues to launch large-scale missile and drone attacks, recently targeting Kharkiv, Zaporizhia, and Kyiv with 39 rockets and 420 drones in a single night, resulting in 25 reported injuries.

Ukrainian forces are mounting counteroffensives, reclaiming territory near Kupyansk – 183 square kilometers – and making further gains in Oleksandrivka and Hulyaipole, totaling an additional 165 square kilometers. These counterattacks indicate a continuing escalation of the conflict, rather than a stalemate.

The situation echoes historical power dynamics, according to observations reminiscent of 17th-century French Cardinal Richelieu. Richelieu, a key figure in French history known for his pragmatic approach to statecraft, noted the parallels between Putin’s actions and his own pursuit of a balance of power, specifically preventing the dominance of a rival power – in Richelieu’s case, the Habsburgs.

“Putin is playing my game: balance of power,” a commentary attributed to Richelieu observed. “He does not want NATO at his border, just as I did not want Habsburg hegemony. I supported Sweden and Protestants against Catholics – out of *raison d’état*.”

Russia’s military gains are described as slow, averaging between 15 and 70 meters of territory gained per day. The conflict is characterized as a war of attrition, with Russia relying on a larger manpower pool to sustain its offensive. Although, concerns are raised about the sustainability of Russia’s efforts, given its economic challenges – with growth at only 0.6 percent in 2025 – and dependence on China for crucial supplies, such as drones.

The role of the United States, now under the leadership of Donald Trump, is also being viewed through a similar lens of pragmatic self-interest. Trump’s stated “America First” policy and his desire to finish the war, due to a perceived lack of strategic interests, are seen as aligning with Richelieu’s own focus on strengthening France by breaking existing alliances.

“Finally, a president with my pragmatism!” the attributed commentary states. “Trump is mediating, wants to end the war because he sees no strategic interests. Correctly, the U.S. Made the mistake of expanding NATO, provoking Russia. Now they are withdrawing, leaving Europe to fend for itself.”

The potential for a shift in U.S. Policy raises the possibility of a realignment of global power dynamics, with some analysts suggesting that the U.S. Might counterbalance a strengthening Russia by aligning with China.

As of today, the outcome of the Geneva talks remains uncertain. President Zelenskyy has characterized the negotiations as representing the “beginning of the end,” while Trump has expressed a desire to “stop the killing.” No official statements have been released regarding the specifics of the proposed meeting between Zelenskyy, Putin, and Trump.

Ukraine War: Drone Attacks Disrupt Moscow Flights, Strikes Hit Kyiv & Lviv

by Priya Shah – Business Editor February 22, 2026
written by Priya Shah – Business Editor

Multiple Moscow airports suspended flights for several hours on Sunday, February 22, 2026, following reports of a drone attack on the Russian capital. Russia’s aviation authority, Rosaviatsiya, announced the restrictions, citing security concerns.

Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin stated that the city’s defenses had intercepted 31 drones, according to Interfax news agency. The Russian Ministry of Defense reported downing nearly 300 Ukrainian drones across the country. Sobyanin, who has served as the Mayor of Moscow since 2010, previously held positions as Governor of Tyumen Oblast, Head of the Presidential Administration, and Deputy Prime Minister of Russia, according to Wikipedia.

The disruptions affected operations at Vnukovo, Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo, and Zhukovsky airports. Flight schedules were significantly impacted, with numerous delays and cancellations reported.

Ukraine’s military claimed to have launched 50 rockets and 297 drones in a nighttime attack, alleging that Russian air defenses intercepted 33 rockets and 274 drones. Ukrainian officials stated the attack targeted energy infrastructure, specifically in the Kyiv region, the Black Sea port of Odessa, and central Ukraine. At least one person was injured in Kyiv, according to Regional Governor Mykola Kalashnyk, with damage reported across five city districts. Oleh Kiper, the Governor of Odessa, reported that fires broke out during the attack but were subsequently extinguished.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha, writing on X, asserted that Russia was “undermining diplomacy” with these “terrorist large-scale attacks” and called for increased international sanctions against Moscow. No immediate statement was released by Russian authorities.

In the western Ukrainian city of Lviv, a series of explosions resulted in the death of one police officer and injuries to several other security personnel, according to local media reports. Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi stated that 14 people were hospitalized following the explosions, describing the incident as a “terrorist attack.” The city is located near the Polish border, approximately 50 kilometers from the European Union.

The attacks arrive as Sergey Sobyanin approaches 16 years as Mayor of Moscow, a period marked by both modernization efforts and criticism regarding political freedoms, as reported by the Moskauer Deutsche Zeitung. He was initially appointed to the position in 2010 following the dismissal of Yury Luzhkov and subsequently re-elected in 2013, 2018, and 2023.

Leaked: Iran-Russia Secret Weapons Deal Revealed

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor February 22, 2026
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

Iran and Russia have secretly agreed to a €500 million ($589 million) arms deal, according to a report published Sunday by the Financial Times. The agreement centers on the acquisition of thousands of advanced shoulder-fired missiles by Iran.

The deal represents Iran’s most significant effort to rebuild its air defenses following what has been described as a weakening of those defenses last year, the Financial Times reported. While details of the specific missiles involved were not immediately available, the scale of the agreement suggests a substantial bolstering of Iran’s capabilities.

The agreement comes as tensions remain high in the Middle East, with the United States increasing its military presence in the region. U.S. President Donald Trump warned on Thursday that Iran must reach a deal over its nuclear program or “terrible things” will happen, appearing to set a 10-day deadline for action. Trump stated that negotiations were “going well” but insisted on a “meaningful” agreement, adding that failure to reach one could lead to further U.S. Intervention.

Trump’s warning coincided with annual military drills conducted by Iran and Russia, and the approach of a second U.S. Aircraft carrier to the Middle East. The Russian Navy released video footage on Wednesday showing one of its warships docking in an Iranian port ahead of a joint exercise. Trump referenced past U.S. Airstrikes, claiming they had “decimated” Iran’s nuclear potential, and suggested further action remained a possibility.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also issued a warning to Iran, stating that any attack on Israel would be met with a “response that they cannot even imagine.”

The timing of the arms deal and the escalating rhetoric from both the U.S. And Israel suggest a complex and volatile situation. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has not publicly commented on the reported arms deal. The U.S. State Department has not yet responded to requests for comment on the Financial Times report.

Trump indicated that a resolution, or escalation, could unfold “over the next probably 10 days,” but offered no specifics on what actions the U.S. Might take if a deal is not reached.

Russia Considers Telegram a Security Risk, Eyes Ban & Promotes Alternative App

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor February 21, 2026
written by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor

Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) accused the Telegram messaging app of providing intelligence to Ukraine’s military and special services, stating that the apply of the platform by Russian servicemen has repeatedly endangered their lives. The accusation, made on Saturday, February 21, 2026, comes as Russian authorities continue to grapple with the app’s widespread use despite attempts to restrict its access.

According to the FSB, Ukrainian forces are able to quickly obtain and utilize information posted on Telegram for military purposes. “The Federal Security Service has reliable data indicating that the armed forces and special services of Ukraine are capable of quickly obtaining information posted on the Telegram messenger and using it for military purposes,” the FSB stated. The agency further claimed that analysis of Telegram’s usage by Russian military personnel over the past three months revealed numerous instances where the app created life-threatening situations for soldiers.

The FSB’s warning follows a period of fluctuating restrictions on Telegram within Russia. In December, Russian authorities began slowing down the app’s performance. A brief, full restriction of access was implemented in early February, but was quickly lifted following complaints from military personnel who rely on the platform for communication.

This latest move by the FSB raises concerns about a potential full ban of Telegram in Russia, mirroring previous actions taken against other social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, and WhatsApp since 2019.

Telegram, founded by Pavel Durov, is widely used in both Russia and Ukraine, serving as a key communication tool for individuals, government agencies, and soldiers on the front lines. Durov was briefly detained in France in 2024, facing accusations of allowing criminal activity on the app, and has consistently criticized restrictions on digital freedom, often focusing on policies in Western governments. Reports have also surfaced alleging cooperation between Durov and Russian intelligence agencies.

For months, Russian authorities have been pressuring Telegram to host user data on servers located within Russia. The Digital Ministry has also asserted that foreign intelligence services are accessing data through Telegram to aid Ukraine’s defense efforts. Telegram has repeatedly denied these allegations.

Concurrently, Russia is promoting Max, a domestically developed messaging app intended to replace Telegram, WhatsApp, and other platforms. Although, Max has faced criticism for its potential as a surveillance tool, raising concerns about censorship and propaganda.

Dmitri Peskov, a spokesperson for Russian President Vladimir Putin, acknowledged that the Russian leadership utilizes Telegram for disseminating information. However, he noted a growing shift towards Max among government agencies, potentially in anticipation of a future ban on Telegram.

Ukraine Conflict: Zelenskyy Rejects Donbass Concessions, NATO Dismisses Russian Advances

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor February 14, 2026
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy firmly rejected any concessions regarding the Donbas region during an appearance at the Munich Security Conference on Saturday, stating that asking residents to abandon their homes would be a “great idea” only to “the big bosses.” The statement came as U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio abruptly cancelled a planned meeting with European counterparts on the sidelines of the conference, a move described as “crazy” by European officials.

Zelenskyy’s comments addressed persistent Russian demands for Ukraine to cede control of the Donbas, areas of Donetsk and Luhansk currently under Kyiv’s control. He framed the suggestion as a callous disregard for the approximately 200,000 Ukrainian citizens still residing in those regions. “I should go to them, to every apartment, knock and say: Seem, a great idea! Forget your home, forget everything, your relatives, leave your home, because that is the great idea of the big bosses,” Zelenskyy said, according to a report from the Ukrainian news portal Politico.

The cancellation of Rubio’s meeting, initially scheduled with representatives from Germany, Finland, Poland, and the European Union Commission, adds to the diplomatic complexities surrounding the ongoing conflict. The Financial Times first reported the cancellation, citing U.S. Sources. The abrupt change in plans occurred as Rubio prepared to deliver a keynote address at the conference.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte offered a stark assessment of Russia’s military progress, comparing its advance in Ukraine to that of a “garden snail.” Rutte also highlighted the significant casualties sustained by Russian forces, claiming that 35,000 soldiers were killed in December alone, followed by another 30,000 in January. “These are the facts,” Rutte stated, emphasizing the need for continued support for Ukraine. “That is why we must maintain Ukraine strong, because we see that they are using our support in the best possible way.”

In a separate development, Zelenskyy awarded a state order to Wladyslaw Heraskewytsch, a Ukrainian skeleton racer who was disqualified from the Winter Olympics. The award recognizes Heraskewytsch despite his exclusion from the games. A concert intended as a show of U.S.-Ukrainian solidarity is planned, with further performances scheduled in the coming weeks, according to organizer Tetiana Marosowa.
