Ukrainian Journalist’s Cruel Death: Sanctions Expand Over Human Rights Abuses

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor November 20, 2025

EU ‌Expands⁤ Sanctions Following Evidence of Torture and Death of Ukrainian Journalist

Brussels – The European Union ⁢has ⁢extended ⁣sanctions against Russia for the second time this year, targeting 28 individuals implicated in severe human rights abuses and the suppression of democratic opposition, according to⁣ Ukrainska‌ pravda. The move comes amid‍ mounting evidence of atrocities committed ⁤against detainees, including‌ the brutal death of Ukrainian investigative‍ journalist Viktoria Roshchiyova.

Roshchiyova, who would ⁢have turned 29 this year, disappeared in August 2023 while investigating and documenting‌ instances‌ of violence against ⁣civilians following the Russian invasion of⁣ Ukraine. Confirmation of her death in Russian custody arrived ‍in October 2024, with her ⁤remains returned to Ukraine ‍exhibiting horrific⁣ signs of torture.⁣ An examination revealed missing‍ organs⁣ – including the trachea, eyes, and brain – and also electrical burns‌ and extensive ‍bruising.

The ‍sanctions also address the targeting ‍of⁢ activists linked to Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny and his foundation, which Roshchiyova supported. Prior to her disappearance,‍ Roshchiyova was ‍briefly arrested in 2023 and released after being coerced into stating Russian forces had saved her life. She never returned after a subsequent‌ detention.

At least 15 detainees ‌are‌ reported ‍to have died as a result of ⁢ill-treatment, according to‍ Ukrainian justice. The⁢ EU’s⁤ initial sanctions were ⁣imposed in May of this year, and this latest expansion⁣ underscores the bloc’s commitment to holding those responsible for human‌ rights violations accountable.

Russian Strikes Kill At Least 25 in ⁣Ukraine, Including Children

Ternopil,‍ Ukraine – A Russian attack‍ on Wednesday killed at least 25 people in the⁢ western Ukrainian city of Ternopil, officials reported, as Moscow intensified its strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure‌ adn civilian areas. The attack, which involved drones and missiles, also injured nearly 50⁣ people across multiple regions.

The strikes⁢ come as diplomatic efforts to find a path to peace remain stalled, though a U.S. official indicated that the State Department’s ‌former special envoy for Ukraine, Kurt Volker, is scheduled to‌ meet with ‍Ukrainian President Volodymyr ⁢Zelenskyy this week to explore potential avenues for renewed peace ⁤talks. Ukrainian officials have confirmed Volker’s visit to Kyiv but have⁢ not commented on discussions regarding negotiations‍ with Russia.

Russia’s Defense ministry ⁣stated the ⁣attacks targeted Ukrainian energy facilities and military-industrial targets, including drone depots, in response to Ukrainian ⁢strikes on Russian territory.

in Kharkiv, ⁢Ukraine’s second-largest city, Russian drones injured⁤ 46 people, including⁣ two‍ girls, according to⁣ oleh syniehubov,⁣ head of ‍the regional military governance. The drones struck residential buildings, an ambulance station, a‌ school, and other civilian ‍infrastructure.

Neighboring Romania and Poland were also impacted by the escalating conflict. Romania scrambled two Eurofighter ‌Typhoon jets and two F-16s after a drone entered‌ its⁢ airspace during the Russian attacks. Poland ‌deployed ⁢its military aircraft and temporarily closed airports in ⁢Rzeszów and⁢ Lublin as ‌a precautionary measure.

Simultaneously occurring,‍ Russia claimed to have intercepted‍ four American-supplied ATACMS missiles fired⁣ by Ukraine ‌at the city of Voronezh on Tuesday. Debris from⁤ the intercepted missiles reportedly damaged‌ a private house, an orphanage, and a gerontology center,⁢ though no casualties were reported. Ukraine’s General Staff confirmed ‌firing ATACMS missiles at Russia⁣ but provided no⁢ further details.

The conflict, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, has resulted in a devastating humanitarian crisis and widespread destruction across Ukraine. Western nations have provided important military and financial aid to Ukraine, but a resolution to the conflict remains elusive.

American Generals in Kyiv: Peace Talks and Missile Debate

Top U.S. Generals On-the-Ground Assess Ukraine Battlefield as ATACMS Missiles Prove Critical

KYIV, Ukraine – Key American generals ‌are currently in Ukraine conducting battlefield assessments as the country utilizes both older and newer versions of the ATACMS ⁤missile system, supplied by the United States, in its ongoing conflict with Russia. The presence of these high-ranking U.S. military officials underscores the escalating ⁢importance of the war and the direct American interest in its outcome, while the deployment of ATACMS‍ missiles marks a significant shift in Ukraine’s long-range strike capabilities.

Ukraine first employed ATACMS missiles a ⁣year ago, targeting sites in russia’s Bryansk ‍region, prompting a strong reaction from the Kremlin. Russian officials labeled the move “the West’s entry into the war” and threatened retaliation, including the potential use of their newly developed⁢ Orešnik hypersonic missile. Vladimir Putin claimed ‍the Orešnik travels at ⁤ten times the speed of sound and is “impossible to shoot down,” with an alleged experimental launch occurring on Dnipro last November 21.

The Ukrainian army ⁣now fields two ATACMS variants: the M39A1 Block,⁤ initially used by the U.S. in the 1991 Gulf ‌War‌ during the liberation of Kuwait, and the more ‍modern M57, ⁣which began production twenty years ago. The missiles provide Ukraine with a crucial ability to strike deep behind enemy lines, targeting command centers, air defense systems, and logistical hubs.

Title: Zelenskyy Travels to Turkey in New Peace Push Amidst Sanctions and Fighting

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor November 18, 2025

Zelenskyy in turkey for High-stakes⁢ Talks to End Russia’s War

ANKARA, Turkey – Ukrainian ⁢President Volodymyr Zelenskyy arrived in Istanbul, Turkey, ‌on Friday for meetings ⁣with Turkish President Recep⁢ Tayyip Erdoğan aimed at securing a just and lasting peace to end Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine. The visit comes as fighting continues in eastern Ukraine, including recent drone strikes ‍in Dnipro that injured two people and damaged six residential buildings, as well as the offices‍ of‌ Ukraine’s public broadcaster Suspilne.

Zelenskyy’s trip underscores Turkey’s role as a key mediator in the conflict, having previously hosted peace talks between Ukrainian and Russian delegations.⁤ While a ‍breakthrough is not guaranteed, the discussions are critical as Ukraine seeks international support to end the war on terms that respect its sovereignty and territorial integrity. The conflict, now entering its third year, has displaced millions ⁢and caused widespread destruction, with significant implications for global security‌ and ‌energy markets.

Turkey ‌has‌ maintained a delicate balancing act throughout ⁤the war, providing Ukraine with military aid while also seeking to maintain economic ties with Russia.President Erdoğan has repeatedly offered to host further negotiations and has emphasized the importance of a ceasefire.

The visit also comes amid ⁤growing domestic political pressure for Zelenskyy, who is facing scrutiny over a $100 million embezzlement and kickback scandal involving top officials⁢ and Ukraine’s state nuclear power company. The ‍scandal led to the resignations of two members of‌ his cabinet last week. Former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has demanded the ‌dismissal of the entire Ukrainian government, ‌staging a protest in⁢ the Verkhovna rada, ukraine’s Parliament, halting the parliamentary session. Zelenskyy has pledged to address corruption, but has faced previous graft scandals that have‍ fueled public outrage. He is scheduled to meet with senior officials and parliamentary leaders on Thursday to discuss the matter.

Associated Press writers Suzan Fraser, Suman Naishadham and Matthew Lee contributed to this report.

Poland Suspects Ukrainians Involved in Railway Sabotage

by Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor November 18, 2025

Poland Investigates⁤ Ukrainians Allegedly linked to Russia in Railway Sabotage

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced on ⁢Tuesday that⁤ two Ukrainian citizens are suspected of intentionally damaging a railway line near Warsaw over the weekend, allegedly acting on⁣ behalf of Russian intelligence. The incident occurred‌ near the village of Mika, approximately 100 kilometers (60 miles) southeast of Warsaw, impacting the Warsaw-Lublin⁢ line which connects Poland’s capital to the Ukrainian border.

According to tusk, the suspects have been “operating and cooperating wiht Russian ‍services for a long time.” While their identities are currently withheld ⁣pending further investigation, authorities revealed one suspect‍ was previously convicted in May by a court⁤ in Lviv, Ukraine, for “acts of ‌sabotage.” The other is believed to be a resident of Donbas, a region of Ukraine currently occupied by Russia.

Investigators believe the pair entered Poland from Belarus this ‍autumn and later left polish territory for Belarus ‍following the sabotage. The explosion on Saturday damaged the tracks, perhaps endangering‍ a train traveling to ukraine, a close⁣ ally of Poland.

A separate incident is also under investigation: the destruction of power lines near Pulawy, about 50 kilometers (30 miles) from Lublin. This disruption forced passenger trains to halt service.

polish prosecutors have launched an investigation ⁢into ”acts of ‌sabotage of a terrorist nature” targeting⁤ railway infrastructure and allegedly committed to benefit foreign intelligence. They stated the actions created “an immediate danger⁢ of a⁢ land ⁢traffic ‌disaster, threatening the lives and health of many people and property on a large scale.”

Repairs have been completed at both locations, and no injuries have been reported. To date, 55⁣ individuals have been⁤ detained and⁣ 23 arrested in Poland concerning acts of sabotage.

The Kremlin responded to Tusk’s⁣ accusations with a statement from spokesman Dmitry Peskov, accusing Polish ⁤authorities of “Russophobia” and claiming⁢ Russia is being blamed for all forms of conflict.

These incidents are part of a broader pattern of ⁣arson, sabotage, and cyberattacks experienced⁣ in Poland and other European countries since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022. Poland has previously taken steps to limit Russian diplomatic presence within its borders, including restricting movement and closing consulates.

Drone Strike Damages turkish Tanker in Odesa,Disrupting Energy Import Route

ODESA,Ukraine – A drone strike damaged⁢ a Turkish tanker in the port city ⁣of Odesa on Monday, prompting Romanian authorities to evacuate ⁤nearby villages as a precaution. ⁣The incident occurred as Ukraine prepares for winter and⁤ seeks to bolster its energy supplies through increased imports.

The tanker’s cargo necessitated the evacuation of residents and animals from two villages close to Izmail on the Romanian side of the border, ‍according⁢ to Romanian authorities. The vessel was reportedly en route to deliver U.S. liquefied natural gas to Odesa ⁤via pipelines from the northern Greek port of Alexandroupolis, with deliveries scheduled to begin in January. This new route is a key component of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s efforts to secure energy resources ahead of the colder months, following repeated attacks on Ukraine’s energy ⁣infrastructure.

Elsewhere in Ukraine, Russian missile strikes overnight in Balakliya,‌ Kharkiv region, killed three people and injured 11, ⁢including four girls aged 12, 14, 15, and 17. A⁢ daylight attack on Nikopol in the dnipropetrovsk region killed ⁤two and‌ injured two more, hitting residential buildings, stores, and a ⁢hair salon.

According to⁤ the United ⁣Nations, Russian strikes have resulted in over 12,000 Ukrainian civilian deaths‍ since the ⁣start of ‌the war. Ukraine’s air force reported intercepting 36 of 128 strike and decoy drones‌ launched by Russia overnight, while Russia’s Defense Ministry⁢ claimed to have downed 36 Ukrainian drones in retaliation, targeting Russia’s ⁤power grid. A Ukrainian drone attack also damaged an electricity substation in Russia’s Ulyanovsk region, though no casualties were reported and power supplies ⁢remained operational.
